Remember to consult the Unit Guide for the unit requirements.
In order to pass this unit, you must demonstrate that you meet the learning outcomes standards outlined for all the Learning Outcomes listed below.
CLO1 Demonstrate regular and consistent reflective practice addressing your proficiencies, processes and people skills.
LO1 Apply knowledge and transferable skills required for employment.
LO2 Demonstrate professional practice and conduct in a workplace setting.
LO3 Evaluate Work Placement performance in the context of the program of study.
The following projects have been designed to simulate a range of real-world, paraprofessional scenarios. By undertaking each of these projects, you are able to iteratively work towards addressing the learning outcomes standards of the module as well as develop and demonstrate the 3Ps.
As part of the Work Placement Module here are the scheduled Work Placement Workshops (week 1 - 3) .
We will be covering the following areas each week (feel free to have a look through slides/resources beforehand so you feel prepared for the class):
Week 1: Welcome to CIM310. Looking at what work placement is and what the expectations are for the unit. We will then do some activities to develop/refine your Application Documents.
Week 2: Peer feedback on Application Documents. We will then cover job seeking skills, networking and Industry Bodies.
Week 3: Company structures, ABNs, freelancing, WHS. We will also provide further support on job seeking.
Week 4-12: On going support via 1:1 Appointments either on-campus or via Zoom. These can be booked with Tahlia via tahlia.carter@sae.edu.au
You will need to create an online portfolio, a resume and a cover letter. Guidance will be provided during the compulsory workshops and you can check out the additional resources in the Preparation section of this site.
Your Targeted Reflections acts as a reflection on the placement application process, a diary of your time on placement and a look-back on your overall experience. Behind the scenes photos or images of progress are also strongly encouraged. Please find some writing prompts to include depending on where you are at in your work placement journey:
Before Placement
What is your ideal kind of job in the industry and why?
Places you applied for placement including a little research about the companies and why you'd like to do a placement with them.
What skills are you learning or researching before undertaking your placement? These could include technical, job readiness or interpersonal skills.
Reflect on the process of applying for placements. What methods are you using to find placement opportunities? Did you have any interviews or experiences that helped you to adapt your approach?
Is there anything you changed or think you could change with how you approach and apply for job opportunities?
During Placement
Keep a day-to-day diary of what you did and what happened during placement and make sure to log the hours you work.
Mention anything valuable you learned and how you might apply it in future.
Did you make mistakes? What happened and how did you learn from these mistakes?
Talk about anything interesting or exciting that happened during your placement.
Work practices and processes that informed you for your future career.
Reflect on any feedback you received from your mentor.
Include images or work in progress or any behind the scenes pictures.
After Placement
Reflect on your overall experience once your placement is finalised.
Did you enjoy it? Mention a stand-out experience or moment you are proud of from your placement.
Was it a valuable learning experience? Did you learn anything new on placement and how did it relate to what you learnt at SAE? Was what your learned at SAE applicable to what you did on placement?
Is it the kind of job you can imagine yourself doing after you graduate?
Where are you going from here and what steps do you need to take to get there?
Did this placement lead to any new networks or job opportunities?
A total of 3 x 500-word targeted reflections will be required in order to succeed in this project.
Stage 1: pre-placement, Personal development goal (weeks 1-3 of class)
e.g. What do you hope to get out of your WIL experience? What new skills would you like to develop (resume writing, cover letter drafting, portfolio collation, discipline-specific knowledge, creative development, startup skills, learning how to monetise your current skillset?)
1. By week 3, draft your first 500-word reflection (personal development goal) which addresses these questions, and informs your personal development goal: a final statement which briefly details what you would like to achieve over the course and your time on placement.
Stage 2: during placement, Study-work transition statement (weeks 4-7)
e.g. how will you apply some of the knowledge and experience you have gained over this course (and your entire program) to your work experience on placement? What benchmarks and expectations does your prospective host, and industry generally, have for someone in your projected placement role? How will the knowledge, skills and experience studies transfer into a practical work environment? Don’t forget your interpersonal ‘soft’ skills: these are crucial to success in any workplace, just as much as your discipline-specific skills. How will you record important information related to your placement role? How will you maintain effective communication with your colleagues and host? How will you manage your time to fit with your host institution’s schedule?
2. By week 7, draft your second 500-word reflection (study-work transition statement) which addresses these questions (you may also refer to the three Ps above: process, person, proficiency), and informs your study-work transition statement, a practical plan for how you will successfully transfer your unique skillset from the course and other experience into something your placement host values in a professional environment.
Stage 3: post-placement Summary of learning / Linkedin professional statement (week 11)
e.g. what opportunities and challenges did you find over your placement? How did you take advantage of the opportunities, and overcome the challenges? What did you learn in terms of both specific, discipline-related skills, and more general workplace understanding that you can transfer to your next workplace? What did you learn about yourself as a creative industry professional?
3. By week 11, draft your third 500-word reflection (summary of learning, Linkedin professional statement) which addresses these questions (you may also refer to the three Ps above: process, person, proficiency), and informs your Summary of learning, and Linkedin professional statement, a summary of the skills and qualities you found most relevant and useful in your placement. This is excellent practice for summarising your suitability for future roles, and adapting different aspects of your skills, experience and personal qualities across different work environments.
Submit your 3x 500-word reflections to campus online on a pdf, Word or Google doc (or alternate presentation in class or as mp4) by week 11
Inform your local ILC/Work Placement Facilitator when you have completed your hours.
This will then prompt them to send the Host Mentor Feedback form directly to your placement mentor.
