My name is Shay-Lee, but everyone calls me Shay for short. Outside of SAE I draw a lot on paper or digital, having to experiment with other things to find a way to improve my artistic skills. Along with experimenting my art skills I also try to finish creating my own business website, doing things such as basic art (drawing, painting, digital etc.), photography, filmography, makeup/face painting, and hopefully soon my own merchandise.
When it comes to showing my own art work, I use 'Instagram' as it tends to catch more people's attention and it is easy to use.
Not only do I post my art and animation, I like to look at other artists work pieces, seeing what program they used, how long they have been doing art for, and even trying out some of the challenges that go around such as 'Draw This Your Style' challenge. It's a great way for people to re-create the artists artwork in our own style and show off to see everyone's work and maybe even give them likes and follows to see more of their work.
Through out this trimester, it was mainly focused on the 3D side of Animation. I myself am not a 3D Animation person but it is still worth having the experience of creating a few things. I created from characters to a animation of a given character.
Creating a Slug Character
Create a Simple/Live Realistic Character Model
Character Unwrapping
Rigging
Animation
Through out these experiences it was a challenging moment of my time in SAE but I was able to get through it. The main thing I did through out the trimester was asking for a lot of help due to not understanding much of anything on the programs 'Maya' and '3Ds Max'. I watched tutorials and had personal help from my teacher to be able to get through the trimester even if I didn't have a proper character to design but I had placed in my work, ideas of a character I would have wanted to create.
Throughout my time this trimester I have learnt more about one of the programs (Unreal Engine), while I also got to do more 2D animation to keep practicing and seek some help with things I might be unsure of. During my time I also learnt about things I need to work on, for example; Communication. I have been noticing my lack of communication when I am in a group or by myself, seeking a helping hand or having questions bottled up in my head. I have learnt that it doesn't matter if I have hundreds of questions, it is ok to ask for help from anyone; teacher or student/class mate.
Project 1
This was a project I worked on by using Unreal Engine. Creating an abandon building and record two hallways
Project 2
A rough sketch animation full body movement based on an animation called "Oh Millie" created by Vivzopop
Project 3 (Group Project)
Here I chose to work on creating and animating three different characters that me and the group chose to create. For example 'Fishman' that I named 'Mark Green'
Project Speciatisation
A small animation I created of a woman's face, changing position while forming a gasp expression
Pencil 2D
Adobe Animate
Unreal Engine
This trimester was very interesting and a very good experience when it comes to future experiences that we as animators will face. We started off with a project called 'Rapid Production', which is about creating a 10-12 second animation (either 2D or 3D) from scratch by ourselves. Then to doing the 'Specialization'. While working on these through out the trimester it was better then I thought it would be before I started everything due to what was needed, what to work on, and always ask for feedback and/or help if needed.
'Specialization' was first more based on the amount of research I could find regarding what I would like to work on through out the trimester along with how at the end, it would effect my skills at that moment.
This is the animation I created for the 'Rapid Production' project. This took me 5 weeks to create from scratch.
Planning
Character Design
Pitches/Audio
Background Design
Animation
Final Look
After working and completed my 'Rapid Production' animation I went straight to working on my 'Specialization' project due to myself not really handling too much work due to focusing on one and then another that was in need on work before its due date.
I was able to list down a few things I would like to work on to make it better for the future, for example in this project I wanted to improve my human character designs and how to draw human bodies better along with improving my environmental designs for my animations as I didn't feel it was suitable.
I started off by bringing up a man named Michael Mattesi, who is a professional body artists who has written a book called 'Forced' along with his own YouTube channel to give lesson to other artists about the human body and how to draw it. This was able to help me learn more about the human body better along with how it moves with certain actions (for example, throwing, jumping, running, rolling etc.)
After that I came across this painting skills called 'Plein Air Painting' which indicates the artist is painting or drawing a view point live. With this I was able to draw plants in different styles to represent it, even if its not the best. By doing this, I was able to find my own way of drawing certain plants such as trees, flowers, bushes, leaf's in different shapes and sizes and more.
After my researching and work for improving my art and animation skills, I felt I had too much time left and decided to create another animation. Just like the 'Rapid Production' project. I decided to create an animation based on showing environment backgrounds along with a human character to show the improvement I have done with my work compared to what I used to do.
This trimester has to be one of the best experiences due to been able to try some more animation and working as a group with other discipline's (Gaming, Animation, Film, Audio, and Graphic Design).
When it came to my first class ANI230, I was able to learn a bit more with 'planning' before creating a animation (World Builders Project). Here I was able to learn more about scripting and scenarios, colour pallets for one or two environment shots, and thumbnail shots that are used to pick the best images for the final animation. After that it was about the 'Studio Core' and the 'Specialization' projects. With the 'Specialization' I focused more on character animation and character design due my characters end up becoming too detailed, not simple enough to be animated. While for the 'Studio Core Practice' project, it was more based on research and creating a resume and accounts for sharing my art on to the public. Basically based on, if I was to look for a job in another animation business.
In my other class CIU212, I was to find a group that I would like to work with that revolves working with other students from different disciplines (as mentioned above) and create a planning set up before next trimester (next trimester is when we start animating everything and put it together before the end of the year). I was in a group of animators and a audio student, creating a 2D and 3D short animation film, 2D main character and 3D background and other characters. Starting from scratch, from script to animatic ad rough animation.
This trimester has been a good and big experience to which in my thoughts, was a great idea. Having the chance to learn a bit more with animation planning and having the chance to work with other disciplines and to work together to create something for the next trimester. This gives student a good example and practice of the future experience if they were to create something as a group of their own or work for a business.

Final Environment Paint:
This trimester was a challenge from my expierence. Trimester 6 was about continueing my group work for the 'Major Project Production' as it was about doing the final planning and start working on animations for the final submission. While working for the group I had another class that I wanted to try out 'Comic Design' and the other was 'Internship'. From my internship I was been paid to stay and work for a company called 'Gardian Technology' they wanted an animator to make a simple step-by-step video, but they asked me to not show any of the actual work as it is....
While working in the group, it started off smooth until things started to change. After having a moment of stress and not keeping out for my health I took little time off to work on myself. To then I was able to catch up and get two scenes done; outlined, coloured and exported into PNG for another group member to put it with the 3D environment background.
For my other class it started off good as it was about researching and planning on what to make. When it came to finalising it there was a challenge I was given by the class from the feedback. The comic is based on a nightmare in a first person perspective, I wanted it to be dark and spooky/scary to which spooky I got but the class wanted to see colour. It took me nearly 2 days to find the right colours that worked for the theme, that work with other colours and gave it the horror theme.-
We were short on time and I stepped in to work on this scene as it was forgotten. I worked on it through out the week to make sure the group has this scene done and exported, ready to be edited with everything else and have audio with it.
