American Sign Language I Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

American Sign Language (ASL) is the native language of the Deaf community and has a grammatical structure that is not the same as English. This course will include the study of the receptive and expressive use of ASL, as well as an introductory discussion of Deaf culture. Course content covers basic principles in the use of sign, sign vocabulary, and aspects of the grammar of ASL.
This language is a nonverbal language, so much of the class will be conducted nonverbally to immerse students in the language for fuller language acquisition. Students must be willing to follow the “VOICES OFF” rule in class when requested.
American Sign Language II* Grades: 10, 11, 12

This course is designed as a follow-up to the American Sign Language I course. This full year course is geared to equip students to advance to the conversational level of ASL which requires a higher level of receptive and expressive ASL skills. Grammatical structures of ASL will be featured as well as increasing sign vocabulary. ASL storytelling, ASL poetry, Deaf culture, Deaf history, and interviews with deaf individuals are featured elements of this course. The course will be taught primarily with voices off to be fully immersed in the language of ASL which promotes faster acquisition of the language.

This advanced course is designed to help students become more proficient in their conversational skills, using classifiers, both telling and understanding a variety of ASL stories, using conceptually correct signs to match the meaning, using ASL grammatical structures appropriately, and using ASL gloss. This course will also explore current and past cultural issues more in-depth through media sources and personal accounts. This will be a full immersion ASL class with opportunities to use the language with native signers.

This rigorous course introduces students to a fundamental base of vocabulary, grammar, and an appreciation of the language and culture. Individual and group work, as well as, written and oral aspects of the language are emphasized. Students will be able to understand and express themselves in basic oral and written language. This course introduces students to fundamental content and performance requirements for IB French in grade 11.
French II* Grades: 10, 11, 12

This challenging course is a sequel to French I. It emphasizes understanding, speaking, reading, writing, and culture using more complex vocabulary and sentence structure. Students will continue to develop oral proficiency through the use of individual and group work, audio and visual resources. This course will prepare students to enter IB French in grade 11.

Semester Course Number: 7999
Each student will select a language for independent work and study. The teacher will help the student access resources and guide them as they create a portfolio (digital or traditional) to demonstrate their learning and their journey as a learner. At the end of the first quarter, each student will share their learner's portfolio. For the second quarter, they may continue their exploration of the same language or select another language. At the end of the second quarter each students will present their learner's portfolio.

This fun and engaging course is intended to help students become more comfortable speaking Spanish in a wide variety of topics. This course emphasizes listening comprehension, speaking and cultural aspects of the Spanish language. Students are expected to participate in discussions, debates, and cultural activities that help develop proficiency and real world communication skills. **Students must complete Spanish II to be eligible to take this course and they must have a recommendation from their Spanish teacher.
