Carpentry

Description: The Carpentry program is designed to instruct students in all types of house construction and remodeling. Students are involved in foundation layout work, house framing, and exterior and interior finish carpentry work. Students work with a variety of building and finishing materials, and become familiar with modern methods and styles of commercial and residential construction. An integral component of the curriculum involves live hands on shop work, allowing the students to practice all phases of house construction. Major projects will include the construction of a shed and house. Students who complete the program can further their education or enter into the workforce as a framing carpenter, mill worker, finish carpenter and more.

Academic:

Ability to use and perform basic arithmetic skills including: fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, multiplication and division.

Ability to interact with text at 9th grade reading level (including technical documents).

Technical:

Commitment to safe behavior in the shop.

Possess manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.

Ability to be self directed and maintain attention to detail.

Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with others.

Ability to work safely around and with dangerous equipment including: Circular saw, Table saw, Miter saw, Nail guns, Router, and other handheld power tools.

Ability to carry and manipulate building materials.

Ability to climb ladders, staging and handle heights.

Ability to actively participate on the shop floor including sustained periods of mobility.
