Message from Ms. Paas, Principal, about Grad Expectations

Dear Graduates, Parents/Guardians/Caregivers:

Over the years, Stelly’s staff have been honoured to teach, work and learn with our amazing grads of 2024. Through their actions, these students continue to demonstrate a level of stewardship and citizenship to which all should aspire.

The months leading up to graduation are exciting as students celebrate the conclusion of 13 years of education and prepare to embark on the next stage of their journey. Stelly’s staff, parents, and the community endeavour to make this time memorable. They support grad-related activities, provide unique opportunities for grade 12s to experience, and prepare for the graduation ceremony and the grad activities that follow.

Some individuals, however, may decide to choose other activities that may have emotional, legal, or costly ramifications. These activities are unbecoming of a Stelly's graduate -- or a community member. For example, in the past, grad pranks were considered by some individuals as a right of passage. Some pranks have been witty, thought-provoking, and fun. Other pranks have been destructive, costly, and harmful. Pranks can also damage the reputation of the individual, their family, their peers, the school, and the school district.

Students who choose to engage in behaviours unbecoming of a member of the Stelly’s community may have access to school-related activities, including graduation activities, limited or removed entirely. Criminal activities will result in police involvement.

Positive choices allow students to earn the privilege of attending the Recognition Ceremony, for instance. Eligible students complete the graduation requirements and model positive, responsible, and socially-acceptable citizenship. That includes digital citizenship. Students are responsible for creating a positive digital footprint of which they can be proud if seen by families, post-secondary institutions, and future employers.

For the activities leading up to graduation, please review all the information contained in the Grad Google Classroom. Pay careful attention to deadlines, required paperwork, fee payments, and requirements. Ask for help if need be.

Stelly's staff believes that all the graduating students can make profoundly positive choices. They look forward to helping students celebrate achievements in the coming months and continuing on the positive legacy students have built at Stelly’s. Let us all celebrate the accomplishments of Stelly's Graduates on June 27, 2024!

Yours truly,

Melanie Paas

Principal
