Troubleshooting
Over the past few weeks of working, I have prioritized improving my project so that I could be completely sure of my methods and research plan. For a while I was unsure of what research methods I would use in order to answer my hypothesis question and provide valid data to support that claim. I wanted to figure this out before starting my research so that I know what I'm looking for.
I spent a lot of time considering this and trying my hardest to figure out the best plan. I was stuck for a while and went back and forth on what I should do. The biggest problem was that I just couldn't come up with the ideas.
In this period of uncertainty, I started reading "Selma to Saigon" by Daniel S. Lucks. While sifting through the book I finally got an idea for what I could do to finalize my research plans.
I decided I would pick twenty leaders, ten from each movement and then do statistical analysis on their relationship to another. For example I'd see what percentage of Anti-Vietnam war movement leaders were involved with the March on Washington. This way, I could do research on leaders within each movement while also measuring the relationship between the two movements based on these leaders involvements in each movement.
The goal of the project, ultimately, is to see how connected the movements are to each other. By using statistics to determine this connection while also sticking to my research parameters, I should be able to meet this goal.
I spent the week discussing with my mentors about this idea and deciding on whether or not it was a good idea.
First I talked with Mrs. Dobos. We decided that this would be a good plan to move forward with and that it would be good to discuss the changes with my mentors.
Next I talked to Ms.Uchyn. I asked her about my project and explained that I would be using statistics to prove/disprove my hypothesis and she posed the idea of a two proportion z-test. This is something that intrigued me and I will be looking deeper into this to get a full understanding of it and then will decide if I will do that or not.
Next i emailed Mr.Villacres and told him about my idea. He had many questions about my new plan and I have a lot to consider about what he said. The thing I took away the most is how I will categorize these leaders into one or the other movement when some of them had involvement with both movements, this is something I need to decide on.
Lastly, I reached out to a new mentor Mr.Laudick and told him my idea, then asked if I would be able to confer with him over the course of my research from now on. I plan on talking to him about the specifics of the research and to make sure I am getting accurate and valid information from my research.
I have made a lot of changes and new decisions over the past few weeks of my research.
As I described above, I will be changing the way I am presenting my data. I changed from a more subjective analysis to a statistical measurement. This is an important change for my project because it was important to me that I have quantitative data. I have also reached out to new people that can help me with my project, this is a valuable change because it opens me up to having more input and a spectrum of different ideas to work with.
Choices, the change from subjective data to quantitative data was a big choice for me. I have been behind on figuring out the structure of my research, it was incredibly important that I made a decision on this so now I can move forward with my research. Also, the choice of whether or not to do a two proportion z test will have a significant affect on my project and will be a hard decision to make. As of now I am almost certain that I want to pursue that so my next steps would be to look into that with greater depth.
Next Steps
My next steps are to start collecting the data I need in order to fulfill the statistics I want to get, figure out how to do a two proportion z test, keep connecting with my mentors and stay on track with my research schedule.
