Within the past few months I have been sorting out my project and getting prepared to start researching.
I first researched many different topics and looked into different ideas of what sort of projects I could do. I did this in order to discover which sort of realms of interest I could be drawn towards for my project.
From there, I decided I wanted to do my project on how comedians determine the line between risky comedy and offensive comments. I wanted to look deeper into how comedians structured their comedy and how they decided what was too far or not. After looking into this I began to get source material. I looked into many sources to see how they tackled the topic and began to compile a bibliography. After I started to get into the research, I decided to completely change my project.
I shifted from a pop culture centered project towards a historical one. I knew that I have been interested in learning more about the Vietnam War era in the United States so I began to research this to see how I could form a research question to propel my new research. I decided that I would be set on looking into the Anti- Vietnam War movement and the Civil Rights movement. This is when I created my Research Question, "How did the Anti-Vietnam War Movement and Civil Rights Movement affect each other?" I looked into sources and began compiling them to create another bibliography.
The first problem- I could not find enough research on how these two movements were directly linked. This is a huge gap in the research so I was certain that doing this research would be valuable.
After forming my first research proposal, It became clear that I needed to reconsider my methods and restructure my project in order for the research to work out. I also needed to find a mentor for my project.
I was guided towards a mentor named Edward Villacres. He agreed to mentor me and guide me along my project and we planned to talk as soon as possible.
The first meeting- When we first spoke, we reviewed my initial methodology and talked about how I could revise it in order to fix it up before beginning research. He encouraged me to look at the movements and problem from a different view and we discussed alternate ways that I could pose my research question in order to yield better results.
From here, I will be looking into how I can change and adapt my question before starting research.
After talking with my mentor I plan on looking at the problem a little more specifically. I will be looking at how specific political figures and movement leaders had an impact on both movements as well as how they could have been involved in both movements. I am going to be re-framing my question and reconsidering my methodology.
In order to start my research I need to complete these tasks and make sure that my research question is reliable before beginning.
