Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak, and listen effectively, enabling individuals to communicate, comprehend, and engage with information in various forms. It's a foundational skill that facilitates learning, promotes participation in society, and enhances understanding of the world.
Understanding what we read and practising writing are closely connected—and both are essential skills for learning and success. When we truly understand a text, we can think deeply about its meaning, form opinions, and make connections to our own lives. Writing helps us organise these thoughts, express them clearly, and communicate with others. Just like reading, writing takes practice. When we write about what we’ve read—through summaries, responses, or reflections—we strengthen our comprehension. Writing exercises also teach us to use vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar correctly. They help us develop our voice and confidence. Together, reading and writing allow us to explore ideas, show what we’ve learned, and build knowledge in every subject. That’s why exercising both skills is so important: reading teaches us to understand the world, and writing gives us the tools to be part of it.
