Learning intention - To develop an awareness of the hidden cost of disability and the link between poverty and disability.
Module thoughts and reflections:
Dr Rebekah Graham 's points around the day to day costs and the realities of providing additional care and support for children and young people with disabilities.
People's use of language and terminology, actions (despite best intentions) and the reality of funding additional needs can be and is exhausting, relentless, on-going and costly. Food insecurity must be very stressful, especially for woman who often carry the load of caring for and providing for the family as well as trying to meet the demands of their own paid work.
RTLB helping to raise awareness:
Remind and model flexibility in our hui arrangements - can we meet online to make this easier and more accessible for our families and learners?
Can we meet at a time that will best suit the arrangements of this family?
Will this learner benefit from ORS funding and what can I do to support the SENCo to make this happen?
Can we have some korero within the cluster and with our MOE colleagues about students who are turned down from accessing ORS funding but who require significant resourcing to remain in mainstream safely?
