Key reminders from the presentation:
Working memory and sequencing problems often mean students have trouble following instructions, especially when they’re presented verbally.
Handwriting can be challenging due to poor fine motor control (and hard to read)
Executive Functioning Delays mean it is much harder to plan and organise
Students will struggle with work that has a longer plan (such as projects /H.W tasks) where there is little or no direct supervision.
Three main 'types' - inattentive, hyperactive and combined
Harder to detect in girls
Approx 5% of the overall population -possibly 7% in N.Z
Resources and tools I have used with students to support their learning:
Organisation: Colour code all books for easy 'grab and go' option, putting all books and learning equipment in one tote tray to be carried round the work space, easy to read large print daily timetable (with colour coding and full subject name for secondary students), laminated timetables.
Writing supports: Google Read and Write options to support Voice -Text technology, Mindmaps and brainstorms as pre writing supports, Digital mind mapping such as Popplet and Mindmup.
Digital Tools: Voice recording, Book Creator and Voice -Text. Noise cancelling headsets.
Mindfulness: Encourage students to practice slowing down by reading aloud -they can hear their own pace or record it. Mindfulness breaks and Mindfulness Doodle Books and Audiobooks have worked well. Break cards for TIME OUT for 5 mins with the Doodle book.
Hand drawn Mindmaps are still a quick and easy 'go to' for students of any age. Tey can doodle, draw and use abbreviations and symbols to plan and organise idea's.
Digital organisers for students who enjoy I.T.
Challenge: Not always compatible with Google Read /write so students still have to type rather than quickly talk out their idea's and planning which can be taxing.
Popplet and other digital tools often introduce a cost, which can be cumbersome when we need to use a quick, simple tool in school for students ease of use.
Digital tools to support:
Book Creator / Noise Cancelling headset
Book creator: Using apps on loan RTLB iPads to support writing in the junior school for a student in 2022 with fantastic language, idea's and concepts.
Student C is reluctant to write and he finds it hard to type - he is bright and capable and I wonder about him having Gifted talents. Using the iPad, he can record his idea's and add photo's and pictures to evidence his wonderful ideas , creations and learning.
