Learning Intention: To understand the myths in Gifted Education.
Myths in Gifted Education: Of most interest to me was:
MYTH: Mixed ability groups enable gifted learners to model or help those of lower ability and this is highly beneficial to all students.
REALITY: In reality, average or below average students do not look to the gifted students in the class as role models. They are more likely to model their behaviour on those who have similar capabilities and are coping well in school. Seeing a student at a similar performance level succeed motivates students because it adds to their own sense of ability.
In the last few years, I have worked with several students who have been identified as being Gifted. They are both highly complex, vulnerable, have potential for ( or current) mental health challenges and find classroom learning extremely challenging.
I have directed both students into the MindPlus programme in central Auckland, something they have both loved. I have not been aware of or influenced by negative stereotypes or myths although I am guilty of believing the above myth. In my RTLB role, I have also been directed to The Gifted Associated, N.Z and have directed families here too.

I was interested in the Better Leadership comment in this reflection during the July online workshop. Based on Dr Silverman's research, there are many Gifted children and young people that we are unaware of. It would make sense that schools have a lead professional in schools who can provide P. Learning and guidance and highlight the complexity of issues for learners who may be Gifted.
Module Reflection:
Next steps: Now what.....
I will add a new category to my liaison hui template that is shared with school SENCo to monitor and add names under a Gifted category. I am aware of several students but based on the research, there will be many more. It will also raise awareness to schools that these learners are complex and often twice exceptional.
