The Violator: An Artist's Reflection

This sculpture was inspired by the motion of tearing. This was the motion I tried to represent with my hands when I put them into the Alginate, creating the mold. Unfortunately, during the mold making process for my second hand, the solution thickened too fast. My second hand, once the plaster had dried, emerged lumpy and crumbling. In order to add 3D element, and distract from the marred I sculpted and attached Sculpey plates resembling metal patching on the grey painted hands.

Below the hands I sculpted a play dough terrain upon which were several trees. Between the two tearing hands the ground is grey and scared. Sprouting densely from the scared, dead earth are many manufactured, industrial shapes representing a sort of manmade landscape.

The message I tried to communicate with my sculpture is that, often in order to create our manmade world we must destroy the natural one.
