Mainah' Project

Transfer Area: An Artist's Reflection

This sculpture is also mostly about boats. Most of my sculptures are about boats because I know how they are supposed to look to me. Maine has always seemed like an honest kind of place. Boats are honest kinds of transportation. For my final project I wanted to take what I knew and experiment with new techniques. At first I was going to make many sculpey lobster boats using a mold. Unfortunately my mold did not work so I went to work and created boat after boat after boat.

The little boats were all hand made, with love, by me. They are all simple, white sculpey because the important part is each vessel's form. I know sailboats better than motorboats so I mostly made sailboats.

Because boats need a place to boat in, I did photo transfers. I took images of charts from places in Maine I am familiar with and did photo transfers onto sculpey tiles and canvas. Afterwards I glued my boats onto the charts they belong in. This is my first serial kind of art I have done. This was my favorite project. I loved making my little boats.
