Written Reflection:

Above all I am glad I took one more art class before graduation. Sculpture has always intrigued me, but I never pursued. Sculpture was always such a small part of other art classes. I signed up for 3D Design. Right off the bat I was challenged. My usual style did not work in 3D, so I thought.

My first few projects I felt lacked a personal touch. The portrait and the hat are two kinds of art I am not always passionate about. Despite my initial feelings, I worked to find a unique angle. In this class I felt encouraged to explore technique which, after all, is why I signed up. For the portrait I used matches to construct my sister's face. For the hat project I began with a newspaper hat base.

As the semester progressed the projects seemed to become more open-ended. The social/political hands project allowed me to work with sculpey for the first time and make miniatures which I discovered I enjoy doing. When I had the chance to work with clay in the Look Inside project I jumped on the opportunity and built a boat. To compliment the boat I built sculpey miniatures of ores and other nautical equipment. The final Mainah' project allowed me to go all-out and make many miniature boats. Though I did what I am comfortable with during this project I also tried a new technique, the photo transfer. I believe there are many similarities between my drawings and my sculptures, especially the boats.

By and large I am satisfied with how most of my projects turned out. My least favorite is the pirate hat. If I had put more work into that one it might have been smoother. My favorite project was the Mainah' project because I got to make my little boats, however I think my Look Inside turned out the best.

Though I went into 3D without a notion of my personal style in regards to sculpture, I feel I have developed one. This class got me to make art again. Thank you.
