Teaching reading

What Works

We know a great deal about how young children learn to read, but we haven't done enough to ensure teachers are familiar with the science. Sadly, many teachers, whose intentions are good, are not using evidence- informed approaches to help students learn to read. Significant progress in the area of neuroscience has been made in the past two decades in understanding how reading really works and how we learn to read. Listed below are a few principles that aren't in dispute among literacy experts.

  1. Explicit phonics instruction which ensures children learn how letters relate to sounds in order to decode text is necessary .

  2. In order for children to transition from decoding words to becoming fluent readers they need plenty of reading practice with varied texts.

  3. Teaching children comprehension strategies cannot compensate for a lack of vocabulary and content knowledge.
