Traditional Classroom vs. Flipped Classroom

Traditional Classroom:

  • In class: Lectures and note taking.

  • At home: Practice problems and homework assignments.

Flipped Classroom:

  • Outside of Class time: Lectures and note taking.

  • Class time: Practice problems, hands-on lab practices, and in-depth discussions.

Why Flipped Classroom?

  • Lecture materials, in the form of video clips, are created by the Biology staff.

  • These videos mirror classroom lectures with the exception that they can be paused, rewound, or rewatched.

  • Increases exposure to content.

  • Lessens the burden traditionally placed on students & parents at home.

  • Creates more time in class for hands-on laboratory exercises, meaningful discussion, and the reinforcements that students need.

  • Both parents & students can access the lectures, giving families a tool to help students prepare.

The Process:

Students can access the flipped videos on

Schoology

  1. Student is assigned an edpuzzle video to watch and take notes for homework

  2. Outside of class: student will watch, answer the practice questions throughout the video, and take notes in their notebook.

  3. During Next class:

    • Teacher will debrief the notes, answer questions, address misconceptions, and check the students notes.

    • With the support of the teacher, the student will complete a hands-on activity, lab, or other application of the material as in the video.

Expectations:

Edpuzzle video(s) and notes are expected to be completed on-time & outside of class time

Notes are checked the class after EdPuzzles are assigned.

A student will be required to complete the edpuzzle video(s) and notes prior to continuing on to the in-class activity
