Week of Mar 9 - We finished up our discussion of Civil war and Reconstruction and will be reviewing for our test on Wednesday. Students were given a review to complete and those who turned it in on Monday were given an answer key on google classroom. If any additional students turn this in on Tuesday I will share the answer key with them as well.
Remember, our test is Wednesday, Mar 11.
Week of Mar 2 - We are continuing our work on learning about the Civil War and Reconstruction. We will be testing this unit before spring break. I had your children write a test date in their agenda today. I have decided to change their test date to the day before due to other tests that day.

Test review will be assigned on Google Classroom this Thursday, Mar 5.
Week of Feb 19 and Feb 24 - Last week we learned about supply and demand. This next week we will be digging into the causes of the civil war as well as the battle of Fort Sumter.
Week of Feb 10 - We are beginning our unit on Civil War and Reconstruction. We will learn about plantation life in relation to slavery, Eli Whitney and the cotton gin, and then supply and demand.
Week of Feb 3 - We have our Manifest Destiny test on Tuesday. I have graded their reviews and have attached the answer key to the google classroom assignment so students can make sure their review matches the key.
We will then start our unit about the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Week of Jan 27 - This week we will finish our unit on Manifest Destiny. The students study guides are due On Wednesday. I will grade them for them to study.
Revised Social Studies test - Tuesday, Feb 4
Week of Jan 21 - Students will continue to learn about Manifest Destiny and the westward movement. This week will focus on the Native Indian Removal Act, the Trail of Tears, and the Godl Rush.
Our test will be January 31. We are making notecards for students to begin studying with. Look for these in your child's planner.
Week of Jan 13 - Welcome back. We started last week with our Manifest Destiny unit. What a fun way to start by participating in a question dump with the statement "You are leaving for the moon tomorrow forever." It really gave the students something to think about as an introduction to the westward movement. We will continue this week learning about moving west, the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark.
Social Studies test - Friday, January 31. Look for study materials as we progress through the unit.
Week of Dec 16 - Our Forming a Nation assessment will be Tuesday. That being said, we will begin our new unit on Manifest Destiny after the break.
Week of Dec 9 - We are continuing our unit on Forming a Nation. Students learn about the Preamble to the Constitution as well as the 3 Branches of the Government.
EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY - Students have the opportunity to earn 10 points extra credit by memorizing the preamble and saying it to me by Tuesday, December 17. They need to arrange a time with me to say the preamble.
Week of Dec 2 - We will begin our unit on Forming a Nation. Now that the revolution has finished we will explore how the newly independent colonists began to set up their new nation. We will start by learning about the Articles of Confederation, the Great Compromise, The Preamble and then the 3 branches of government.
Week of Nov 18- We are finishing up our Road to the Revolution Unit. Students should be finishing their test review. It is due Monday, Nov 18.
Road to the Revolution Test - Friday, Nov. 22
Week of Nov 11 - We are continuing our Road to the Revolution unit. This week we will finish our discussion of the Boston Tea Party, move into the famous Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, learn about Lexington and Concord, then learn about the First and Second Continental Congress.
TEST - Friday, November 22 - I will be sending out a review this Thursday and expect students to return it . Students will need to fill out this review so I can correct any mistakes. It will be beneficial in their studying for the test. On the review will be items that will be filled in during class (only a few). the review will be complete by Tuesday, Nov 20. Notecards have been started and we will continue to make them for students to study with.
We have also started introducing affixes during the word study portion of our block. During this 10-15 minutes students will be looking at different affixes and words that contain these affixes. They will sort the words, copy them into their personal dictionaries and then learn about where we use these words. On Thursday of each week they will have a quiz over the words. They can prepare for this quiz using the quizlet in the Google Classroom Stampede. These daily grades will be recorded in their language arts classroom.
Week of Oct 28 - Nov 1 - We are continuing our unit about the Road to the Revolution. Friday we learned a little about "taxation without representation" and will spend time this week learning about other taxes imposed on the colonists that cause their frustration and subsequently led to the revolution.
Week of Oct 21 - 25 - This week we start our Road to the Revolution unit. We we learn about the what led to the revolution and how we became a nation. Students will participate in simulations and read about events leading to the start of the Revolution.
Week of Oct 14-18 - This week students will present their Colonies PBL projects on Wednesday at 8:30 in the cafeteria. We look forward to parents attending this presentation to help decide who has the best argument for moving to their colony.
Week of Oct 2-11 - This week the students are working on their actual presentations for the colonies PBL. Be on the look for for an invite for the presentation. Group projects are due Friday, Oct. 11.
Week of Sept 23 - 27 - This week begins our Colonization PBL in which students will begin to research a colony.
Week of Sept 16 - 20 - This week we will learn about colonization as well as the Mayflower Compact. We are preparing for our Colonies PBL.
Week of Sept 9-13 - This week we will finish our sea venture. The students are loving "playing explorer" as they have different mishaps and adventures. We will continue to learn about the colonists and their travel to the new land.
Week of Sept 3-6 - This week we will start to learn about the colonists that came to America. We will learn about what made them want to come and the hardships they faced.
Week of Aug 26-30 - We will continue to learn about geography as we study different types of maps and see what information they provide for us. We will explore why people might have moved to different places as well as learning about the 5 regions of the United States. Remember, the students can learn their states and capitals for extra credit in Social Studies. There are several study resources on our Social Studies Google Classroom.
Week of Aug 19-23 - We spent this last week learning about maps and the different parts of the map. The week ended with the students getting onto Google Earth through Google Classroom to explore both longitude and latitude. The excitement was so fun to watch as they discovered different places and were able to go to street view to see them. Someone even was able to enter an airplane and walk through first class.
Our focus in social studies this year is US History.
These first few weeks students will begin our social studies by looking at the United States in terms of geography. We will study maps and talk about why certain geographical regions look the way they do.
Students will be encouraged to memorize the 50 states and capitals. We will study and learn about the different regions of the US and talk about how they are alike and different. We will learn the geographic terms necessary for map making and reading. We will learn about political and economic regions.
