Week of Mar 9 - We have finished our unit on water cycle and weather and climate and will be starting our Earth science unit. We will start by learning about the formation of sedimentary rocks. We will continue this unit after spring break.
Week of Mar 2 - We have finished learning about the water cycle and will be starting to learn about the difference between weather and climate. Students will be increasing their knowledge of weather and will learn how to differentiate between weather and climate.
TEST - Monday, Mar 9
Review Materials:
Week of Feb 19 and Week of Feb 24 - We are beginning our work on water cycle and weather and climate. Water cycle is not a new concept for us but in 5th grade we are looking at how the sun and the ocean interact within the water cycle.
Week of Feb 10 - This week we will finish our learning of inherited traits and learned behaviors. Students will participate in activities around distinguishing between the two.
Our test for this unit will be Thursday, Feb. 13.
Use the following activities to help review for the test:
Week of Feb 3 - We will spend this week finishing our learning of structures and functions and then move to learning about inherited traits and learned behaviors. Check out the pictures of our lesson on learning about structures of flowers that were similar and different.
Unit 6 test - tentatively set for Feb. 10.
Week of Jan 27 - We will continue to compare structures and functions of organisms. Please make sure to review previous concepts.
Week of Jan 21 - We start this week with our test on Interactions in Ecosystems. As a quick reminder, each test does include questions from previous units to act as a review. We will continue to review these concepts as we move closer to our STAAR science test.
Wednesday will start our new unit on adaptations. Students will compare the structures and functions of different species that help them live and survive in a specific environment and differentiate between inherited traits and learned behaviors of plants and animals.
Week of Jan 13 - We started talking about food chains and will move those chains into food webs. Students are exploring the words: producer, consumer, herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore. Where do those words fit into a food chain and food web? This week will have them working to identify organisms roles within the food web. We will then learn about environmental changes and how they affect ecosystems.
Test - Tuesday, January 21
Week of Dec 16 - We are continuing to look at interactions in ecosystems. Students are really working to learn about ecosystems and how organisms survive and thrive within that ecosystem. We will continue to work on this unit after the break where we will begin to look at food chains and food webs and discuss the how the energy flows within the chain and web.
The tentative test date will be the week of January 13-17.
Week of Dec 9 - We have begun our first unit of Life Science. We are looking at Interactions in Ecosystems. During this unit we will start by observe the way organisms live and survive in their ecosystem by interacting with the living and non- living components. During this part, students will study ecosystems around the world and look at the living and non-living components. We will then begin describing the flow of energy within a food web, including the roles of the Sun, producers, consumers, and decomposers. We will finish the unit with predicting the effects of changes in ecosystems caused by living organisms, including humans, such as the overpopulation of grazers or the building of highways. Vocabulary is important during this unit so I am including quizlets for students to begin learning the meaning of our important words. Students are not responsible for learning the terms abiotic and biotic, however these are the scientific terms for non-living and living components.
Week of Dec 2 - This week we will be finishing up our last physical science unit, Experimenting with Forces. We will be testing on Wednesday, Dec 4.
Students should use the following resources to study:
Week of Nov 18 - This week we will continue working on Experimenting with forces. This week students will test the effects of force on an object through an ADI (Argument Driven Inquiry) investigation. They will be working to answer the question: "How does changing the height a marble is released from on a ramp affect the energy the marble has at the bottom of the ramp?" They will be gathering data and then preparing and presenting their argument throughout the week.
Our word work this week will focus on the affix "spec". Remember, students will do their word sort on Tuesday and the quiz will be on Thursday. This quiz will also have review words from pedi and man, manu. The quizlet will be posted in Google Classroom Stampede on Tuesday afternoon.
Week of Nov 11 - This week we are working on Experimenting with forces. During this unit students will test the effects of force on an object through an ADI (Argument Driven Inquiry) investigation. They will be working to answer the question: "How does changing the height a marble is released from on a ramp affect the energy the marble has at the bottom of the ramp?" They will be planning an investigation, gathering data and then preparing and presenting their argument throughout the week.
We have also started introducing affixes during the word study portion of our block. During this 10-15 minutes students will be looking at different affixes and words that contain these affixes. They will sort the words, copy them into their personal dictionaries and then learn about where we use these words. On Thursday of each week they will have a quiz over the words. They can prepare for this quiz using the quizlet in the Google Classroom Stampede. These daily grades will be recorded in their language arts classroom.
Week of Oct 28 - Nov 1 - Our week will start with demonstrating that the flow of electricity requires a complete path in order to produce light, heat and sound. We will finish our week with our test over Forms of Energy, Light and Electricity and then begin Experimenting with Forces.
Forms of Energy, Light and Electricity Test - Wed., Oct 30. Use the links below to help your child study.
Week of Oct 21-25 - We will finish learning about reflection and refraction of light and then move into electrical energy. Students will learn about circuits. Our unit is quickly coming to an end with the tentative test date of Oct 29. I will update if the date changes. Students should begin to study:
Week of Oct 14-18 - Students will continue to study the properties of light. We will explore and explain how light is reflected and refracted.
Week of Oct 7-11 - We started a new unit last week about Forms of Energy. This week the students are exploring light. We are learning that light travels in a straight line until it strikes an object. Being able to make a model of this concept has been our main focus this week.
Mixtures and Solutions Test - Tuesday, Oct 1
Resources for your child to study:
Week of Sept 23 - 27 - We will continue working with mixtures and solutions. Students will participate in several labs in which they identify which ingredients make a mixture and which makes a solution. We will be preparing for our assessment will be occur within the next 2 weeks.
Week of Sept 16 - 20 - This week starts our new unit, Mixtures and Solutions. Students will be exploring different mixtures to include those that make solutions. A way to support this at home would be to allow them to help with dinner and discuss whether the meal has something that is a mixture (items can easily be separated and keep their physical properties) or a solution (items are not easily separated and ingredients change their physical properties - most commonly one dissolving into another).
Week of Sept 9-13 - Classifying Matter Test - Friday, Sept 13 (new test date)
Students will continue to explore density as we defend the arguments we made last week after our experiments. Once they have defended their argument, we will spend time discussing what we learned. On Thursday, the students will review for their science test on Friday. I will made sure they bring home their notebooks to study.
Week of Sept 3 - 6 - This week we will be exploring density. We have written experiments in order to answer the question "How can you compare the densities of solids and liquids?" This is one way that we can classify matter. Students will gather data, create an argument and then present their argument based on their data. I love how deeply they are learning these concepts.
Classifying Matter Test - Tuesday, Sept 10 (Changed)
Week of Aug 19-23 - What a great week we had learning how to classify matter. We explored magnetism and used mass in order to classify and learned about different states of matter. Take a look at the pictures of our mass lab. The students really seemed to enjoy using Google Classroom to watch the video at their own pace.
Week of Aug 26-30 - This week we will continue to explore classifying matter by learning about solubility and will be starting our first ADI (Argument Driven Inquiry) lab. Watch for pictures of our learning.
These next few weeks students will being our year in science by classifying matter.
TEKS: classify matter based on measurable, testable, and observable physical properties, including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, and gas), relative density (sinking and floating using water as a reference point), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal energy or electric energy
We will engage in activities that allow us to think and explore like scienctists as we observe and infer in order to classify matter. We will participate in our first ADI (Argument Driven Inquiry) unit in which we will explore a guiding question , make a claim, provide evidence for our claim and find justification for that claim.
I am so excited about learning and discovering science with your students this year.
