Week of Mar. 9th

This week we will spend the first couple of days reviewing 2D shapes as students engage in classifying triangles, quadrilaterals, other polygons/non-polygons by their properties and record their hierarchies in their journals. Wednesday we will review for DCA Unit 7, which will be taken on Thursday, the 12th.

On Friday the 13th- Field Day- What a great way to start Spring Break!! Our 5th graders will pair up with 3rd grade for the first Field Day events, from 8:00-9:30 am. Many of our 5th graders will continue to assist the coaches and younger grade levels throughout the day. Each class will alter their learning for the day.

Week of Mar. 2nd

This week we begin with the STAAR Science Interim on Monday. The rest of the week we will work on Scatterplots and input output tables as students identify additive or multiplicative patterns.

The DCA for Unit 7 is tentatively scheduled for Thursday March 12th.

Week of Feb. 24th

This week we will continue our work with coordinate grids, identifying the key attributes of coordinate planes, graphing ordered pairs of numbers arising from mathematical and real-world problems, including those generated by number patterns or found in an input-output table. By mid-week we will begin to solve one- and two-step problems using data from a frequency table, dot plot, bar graph, stem-and-leaf plot, or scatterplots.

Week of Feb. 17th

This week- short though it is- much will be accomplished! Wednesday and Friday we begin Unit 7 -Introducing the Coordinate Plane and Finalizing Understanding of Classifying 2-D Figures, always a fun unit! We start off by learning how we locate points on a grid with a great story about Rene' Descartes. On Thursday we will have our on-line STAAR Ready practice - no studying needed here!

Week of Feb. 10th

This week we will spend Monday and Tuesday finishing up Unit 6, division with decimals; Tuesday we will review multiplying and dividing decimals and taking this DCA on Wednesday the 12th. On Thursday the students will have a pre-test for Unit 7- introducing the coordinate plane and understanding the classifying of 2-d shapes. Then on Friday we end the week with some "sweet" math activities!!

Week of Feb. 3rd

This week we will finish with multiplying decimals then turn our attention to applying our whole number division concepts to division with decimals. Students will use 100ths grids, standard algorithms, and base ten blocks to solve real world problems with decimals.

We have tentatively scheduled our next DCA for Wednesday February 12th.

The week of Jan. 27th

This week we start with a practice STAAR test, then begin Unit 6 with a pretest on Tuesday and the last days of the week we will begin delving into the exciting world of applying our multiplying and division concepts to decimals. No worries for this STAAR practice - this information will help us form small groups to strengthen learning in all mathematical concepts. Our students can bring extra snacks, water bottle- but no gum or candy. Students were given the same information on Friday.

If your child wears an electronic device that has access to a calculator we ask that they not bring it tomorrow. If they forget, please know that we will ask the student to label their device with their name and then we will place it in a baggie and return it at the end of the practice test.

Week of Jan. 21st

These short weeks don't ever really seem short- we still manage to pack in a weeks worth of learning!

When we return we will pick right back up with adding and subtracting decimals using perimeter, then we will look at charts, graphs, and stem and leaf plots using decimals. We have a review scheduled for Wednesday, the 22, with our Assessment scheduled for Thursday, January 23rd. Friday brings us around to a review of fractions - we will solve words problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Week of Jan. 13th [and the 8th-10th]

The first week of Math in 2020 we reconnected with our identity as mathematicians! We will spend a few minutes each day reviewing our Inspirational Math topics from the first week of school including how mistakes are valuable and how our brains grow as we struggle and that depth is more important than speed.

We pick up in Unit 5 with decimal practice in relation to real word situations. Students will compare and order two decimals to thousandths, represent place value using expanded notation as well as adding and subtracting decimals involving perimeter and area.

Week of Dec. 16th

This week in Math will be... interesting. Due to the many school activities we will have shortened classes through most of the week. On Monday we will attend the grade- wide Poetry slam from 7:50-8:50; the 5th grade teachers will enjoy a holiday meal together while our fabulous Homeroom Moms come in and spend time with our kiddos during lunch, recess and a little extra time! Tuesday we have the 3rd Grade Economics Fair from 9:30-9:50 [bring those coins in!]; Wednesday we have our class Holiday party from 12:45-1:30, Thursday brings the last day of the Fall semester for students- Winter Break begins! Classes will stay with their homerooms for the day. In between these events students will be working on Coding and Holiday Math Task cards about recipes- yummy!

Week of Dec. 9th

We start the week with a review of multiplying and dividing fractions with whole numbers as we prepare for our DCA on Tuesday 12/10. On Wednesday Frost homeroom will participate in a Hour of Code with employees from Amazon. The end of the week will have the students begin the next unit with a pretest and introduction to Unit 5 which will cover Extending Decimal Place Value to Thousandths and Applying Addition and Subtraction of Decimals to Data Analysis and Perimeter.

Week of Dec. 2nd.

As we return from our Thanksgiving break our thoughts naturally turn to Math and all it's glory!

We pick right up where we left off- delving into the delightful world of division of unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions. Students will reinforce their learning with a variety of learned strategies including using representations to organize, record, and communicate their mathematical thinking.

The DCA for this unit is scheduled for Dec. 10th, Tuesday.

Week of Nov. 18th

This week we will try to keep our sanity together for a few more days of reinforcing our division of unit fractions by whole numbers as well as whole number division by unit fractions. We will end the week by budgeting for a holiday meal as we shop via grocery store flyers and create a holiday feast!

Week of Nov. 11th

We continue applying multiplication and division concepts to fractions as we explore a variety of strategies and manipulatives- number lines, picture representations, strip diagrams, cuisinaire rods, fraction circles.

Week of Nov. 4th

We start the week off with a DCA over Unit 3, on Tuesday we jump right into Unit 4 where will be applying Multiplication and Division concepts to Fractions. Tuesday we will have pre-test then spend the rest of the week using multiplication in problem solving with fractions. Please remind your 5th grader that their homework is due on Monday.

Week of Oct. 28th

This week we will continue our focus on solving division problems for up to 4 digit dividend by a two digit divisor using learned strategies and the standard algorithm. We will spend Thursday and Friday reviewing for the Unit 3 DCA. I will be sending a homework review packet on Monday, the 28th, that will be due the following Monday, 11/04.

Our DCA for Unit 3 has been moved to Monday November 4th.

Week of Oct. 21st

This week we will spend the first part of the week continuing our exploration of Volume, explicitly using the formulas Bh = V and V = l w h. By midweek we will move on to multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers.

At this time it looks like our next DCA for Unit 3 is scheduled for Friday November 1st.

Week of Oct. 14th

We have a 3-day academic week- but we are going to pack it full of learning the Maths! After a couple of extra days off our 5th grade Mathematicians will continue exploring standard cubic units and determine what “cubic unit” really means. Students will investigate various spaces to figure which volume unit would be best to find its volume. Students use multiplication to calculate the volume of rectangular-based prisms.

Week of Oct 7th

What a great week we have ahead for us! Monday we review Unit 1 & 2 DCA's, giving everyone the opportunity to acknowledge their room for growth- see what was challenging or what they found less challenging! We will also have a pre-test [this is not graded- we review this at the end of the Unit]for Unit 3, Introducing Volume and Finalizing Fluency with Whole Number Multiplication and Division. The rest of the week students will be Introduced to the world of Volume and focus on new vocabulary terms including base, cube, cubic unit, unit cube;

Students will understand that the volume of a rectangular prism can be calculated by determining the number of cubes in the first layer covering the area of the base and then multiplying that by the number of layers of cubes that fill the prism.
Students will use standard units (unit cubes) to measure the volume of a rectangular prism.
Students will understand that volume is a measurable attribute that quantifies an amount of three-dimensional space.

And the cool thing is - they will hardly realize that's what's happening- because we have the coolest activities planned to reinforce this learning!

And we get to spend some time reflecting on our growth in Math as we prepare for our participation in the student led parent & teacher conferences.

Week of 9/30-10/4

On Monday and Tuesday students will review for the Unit 1 & 2 DCA's which will be administered on Wednesday, 10/02 and Thursday, 10/03. And then the students will enjoy a day of fun-filled Math centers on Friday! What a great way to end the week!

Parents- I have reminded the students to take their spirals home to study over the weekend and they will be reminded again on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I encourage the students to review their vocabulary terms- study the foldables, study the quiz from Unit 1, do their best to follow the format expected for Order of Operations problems [pizza slices], adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, equivalent fractions, and interpreting data from frequency tables, dot plots, and bar graphs.

Unit 1 covers Prime & Composite Numbers- understanding the Rules of Divisibility will assist the students, and Order of Operations- P'MDAS. Unit 2 covers adding & subtracting fractions, equivalent fractions and Data analysis problems.

Week of 9/23-27

This week our students are working with their Cuisenaire rods as they practice subtraction of fractions, using number lines to solve comparison problems by finding the difference between two values. We end the week and spend the first two days of next week focusing on Area and Perimeter and Data Analysis.

Students will be able to represent and solve problems related to perimeter/area and related to volume; determine the length of an object to the nearest whole or fraction of a marked unit; solve one- and two-step problems using data from a frequency table, dot plot, bar graph, stem-and-leaf plot, or scatterplot.

**The first DCA will cover Units 1 and 2 and will be administered over 2 days, these are scheduled for Wednesday 10/2 and Thursday 10/3.** Tuesday, October 1st will be a review and catch-up day.**

Week of 9/16-20

This week our students will continue exploring fractions by showing how the number 1 can be represented as the sum of unit fractions and using the Math tool, Cuisenaire rods, to create equal partitions on the number line to accurately locate proper and improper fractions. Towards the end of the week we will continue our work with Cuisenaire rods by adding unit fractions with unlike denominators - ½, ¼, ⅛. Our focus this week will be on seeing how comfortable students are with using equivalent fractions to find sums of unit fractions with unlike denominators.

Week of 9/9-13

This week in Math we begin with a review of the Divisibility Rules, Prime and Composite Numbers, and Order of Operations- followed by a quiz on Tuesday. Wednesday through Friday we shift our focus to fraction addition and subtraction. Students will examine real world scenarios and utilize known strategies to solve problems involving fractions with different denominators, recognizing and using equivalent fractions to find sums of unit fractions with unlike denominators, and identifying improper fractions and mixed numbers on a number line.

All students are encouraged to take their spirals home to use as a study guide.

Week of 9/2-6

This week we will continue our work with Prime and Composite numbers with a review on Wednesday as students will work in groups with Task Cards. We will end the week with "Pizza Slices" and "Candy Strips" - which makes learning about Order of Operations a lot more interesting!

Week of 8/26-30

We start the week off reviewing Place Value by participating in small and whole group discussions on the meaning of the value of each digit in any given number ranging from thousandths to one hundred billion.

Students will become familiar with the Rules of Divisibility and we close the week with students identifying whether a number is prime or composite

Week of 8/19-23
