Course Summary

The course looks at music of the past and present, classical to popular, east to west, it aims:

  • To develop sensitivity, appreciation and enjoyment of music.

  • To encourage perceptive and critical responses to music of different styles, cultures and historical periods.

  • To provide a basis for further study in music and related occupations.

Course Assessment

60% of the course is coursework and 40% listening exam

  • Component One: Listening & Appraising (40%) - Set Works, 1hr 45-minute exam

  • Component Two: Composing (30%) - 2 Compositions, coursework and controlled assessment, one to a set brief and one free composition,

  • Component Three: Performing (30%) - Coursework and controlled assessment, one Solo and one ensemble performance

Career Pathways

Skills acquired during this course can be used in the following options:

  • Diploma in Popular Music.

  • A level in Music Technology, Traditional or Performing.

  • Primary Teaching is always looking for those with a music specialism.

  • The Music Industry, including Radio and Recording Industries are also that bit more accessible to those with this type of musical background
