Essay writing skills
Contrary to most beliefs, Media is a writing-heavy GCSE subject where students must learn to criticise, analyse, and evaluate the Media support or reject certain viewpoints. The ability to form clear and concise arguments is essential to succeed.
There are two examination papers at the end of year 11, which are 1 hour and 30 minutes each. This will range from extended evaluative questions and shorter memory testing questions. This is 70% of the course.
19 varied Case Study Products (CSPs)
Students will study a range of CSPs across different types of Media: TV, music videos, film, radio, newspapers, adverts, video games, and more.
Coursework 30% - Creative Element
The AQA Non-Examined Assessment is worth 30% of the student's final grade. It comprises of 2 parts: 1 main project being made 'from scratch', and a statement of intent. Past NEAs have consisted of 4 pages of a local newspaper, 3 print adverts, 4 pages from a gossip magazines - all of which need original photos and ideas.

Students will learn upto 30 Media Theories and need to be able to apply this to the Media content studied, such as Baudrillard's Hyperreality or Paul Gilroy's Post-Colonialism theory.

Past NEAs have consisted of 4 pages of a local newspaper alongside 3 print adverts or a working website review page for an original film and 8 instagram posts to support the website. All of the coursework needs to include original photos and ideas belonging to the student.
