READING: I utilize the 40 Book Challenge in my class. Students will be challenged to read 40 books during the year. I know it sounds like a lot, but it is an achievable goal. Students are asked to read books from many different genres, for example, mystery, fantasy, poetry, historical fiction, etc. Books over 250 pages count as 2 books. The goal is to remove the, "I have to read to get points" mentality and get students to read and find books that interest them so they can find enjoyment in reading and become lifelong readers.
WRITING: Research reports, stories, poetry, persuasive and argumentative, we cover a lot of different types of writing. Spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and editing skills will be worked on weekly.
SPEAKING: My students give many presentations in class throughout the year. From impromptu one minute presentations on a topic of my choice, to 2 minute presentations after 15 minutes of research to 7 minute presentations with no notes at the end of the year. My students will learn how to put information together to present it orally to others.
