Thank you so much to everyone who donated to Pack the Bus today. We know it can be a hard time for families, so we really appreciate the effort!
We have been loving our swimming time! Take a look at our boys trying out their football skills!!
Check out some more 'pool tricks' and our whirlpool at the end!
This term we have been reading a novel called 'Secrets of a Schoolyard Millionaire! It is about a pair of friends who find ONE MILLION DOLLARS! We finished the story on Monday and have been doing some activities based on it, such as: doing book reports, re-designing the cover, making our own money and treasure boxes and creating WANTED posters for the villian in the story.
We linked this in with our Maths and have been exploring money! Some of us even brought in some money from around the world to look at - we got to examine money from Australia, Czech Republic, Tonga, Europe, England and America! We noticed that each coin/note had important pictures related to the country, and also a year that the money was produced.
With all of the xmas shopping going on, Mrs Pedersen decided to get some help with her groceries! 🤣 We looked at New World mailers, added up how much Mrs P's shopping would be, and then created our own shopping lists. We learnt that we had to round up to the nearest dollar as there aren't 1c coins in NZ.
We love seeing the creativity shine during our wet play times. Blocks, puzzles, dress ups, drawing... etc. Our ākonga are so creative!
We went crazy creative yesterday!!!! Our ākonga created their own Hauora Hopscotch. Each strand of the Whare was used as an activity. Taha Tinana - physical movement, Taha Wairua - something that makes you calm, Taha Whānau - Friendship activity, Taha Hinengaro - something that makes you feel better when you are sad.
Each child created their own activities and then we played hopscotch. It was a buzzy afternoon - wheo ke! We had so much fun drawing on the carpet!!!!
What a DAY! We had an awesome time up at the Massey Athletics Track. It was extremely hot - we are SO beyond proud of our Pae Ake kiddos! They were amazing. Ka pai to everyone that participated and gave everything a go!
In addition to our mahi we have been concentrating on taking some time to reset and feel tau. Tummy breathing is a great way to regulate your breathing at a slow and steady pace. This then calms you down and allows you to reset. The best way to make sure we are breathing down into our tummies is to put an origami boat on our stomachs and watch it rise and fall with our breaths. Ka tino pai koutou, he pai ngā whakangā! Great relaxing everybody!
If you get the chance to make an boat with your whānau please share photos with us!
Kia ora e te iwi, we have been looking into the Whare Tapa Whā model. This model represents the four walls of a house and how all areas of a person/house need to be strong or the house/person will fall.
We had a great korero with the kids about what fills their buckets, what makes them happy and what makes them feel tau or balanced.
Nolan, Scott and Hudson were able to build a Whare out of wooden pieces. It looks pretty amazing! Ka rawe koutou! Thanks you three for helping our class. Take look at their awesome mahi.
I tera wiki, ko te Wiki Hauroa. One of the activities is going to be tummy breathing. This is when you lay on your back and focus on your breathing, to help you breath deeply so you can feel tau. Once you have created your boat you will be able to put it on your tummy and watch it go up and down as you deep breath.
Today we listened to Makayla and Maia read their book that they had created. It was a very funny story about Spongebob and his friends having a party. The girls wrote chapters and the book is now sitting in our classroom's library for all of Pae Ake to enjoy. Ka mau te wehi, korua!
We have had a chance to explore Green Screen in Pae Ake! Pepi and Ari have been working with their book reviews, creating their scripts and then acting in front of the camera. Not an easy task!!! Watch this space as we get some new technicle tools to make our recording experiences even better! This is our first take, we will be looking at how we can get better at being Movie stars!!!
A nice short week for us this week, but we have still squished in a lot of learning! As a part of our Hauora Inquiry we have been learning about how to stay healthy and be balanced. We are learning how to say different fruit and vegetables in Te Reo. He aha tenei huawhenua? What is this vegetable? We are working on a video that we will share with you soon!!!
We had Friday Opt In's! Mrs Whitta took a quilling lesson - some really amazing paper art! Mrs Pedersen took some Sgraffito art, with some patterns inspired by Rangoli for Diwali.
We have been working on our own Passion Projects during Reading time. There has been a lot of independent mahi happening!! Lots of models, posters, comics and research has been keeping our ākonga busy during the first 2 weeks. Take a look at our mahi, the smiles on their faces say it all!!!!
Thank you so much for bringing in the delicious healthy kai for us to share as a part of our Inquiry! Some of us went back seconds, thirds and fourths!
On Thursday we had an Earthquake Drill, where people all across Aotearoa discussed and practised what would happen if there was a real earthquake! Your tamariki did incredibly well! They all knew to tuck, cover and hold until it was safe.
While Te Puawai and Nga Tewhatewha kids are out on a Thursday afternoon, we started a piece of Art! This is a Pou that is special to us - represents us. We can't wait to see what they look like when they are finished!
We are looking into Hauora - Health and what it looks like to every individual. There were lots of ideas being brainstormed. It took as a matter of minutes to realise that everyone is different and each person, whānau, culture, country have their own view and point of views. It was great discussion! Our kids are so in tune with their eating and what makes a balanced diet. Take a look at our ideas, we tried to merge some of the ideas together because we were running out of room!! Ka tino pai o whakaaro, Pae Ake! - Amazing thinking/thoughts, Pae Ake! Our second session was about cause and effect. If you eat too much unhealthy food, you will get a stomach ache like the poor Hungry Caterpillar!!
We are exploring measurement!! First we looked at length and measuring in cm and mm. We measured objects in our classroom and outside. We found things that are also taller than us as well!!! This week we began exploring capacity. Water fun was had by all!!!
We have created our very own Pae Pae in Pae Ake. This is where our special speakers sit when they are delivering their messages. Each morning 2 of our ākonga sit on the Pae Pae and introduce themselves, ask how we are all feeling, work out the Tau o te rā - the number of the day, ask what day it is today, yesterday and tomorrow in reo, ask what month and season we are in - also in reo and sort out lunch orders and deliver any school notices.
This job comes with mana and respect. A job that is well sort after in our classroom!
Our focus for our independent Maths is on measuring. Today we worked with a ruler and created lines using cm and mm. Once we got the hang of that we moved onto estimating measurements and then measuring objects in our classroom. It was great to hear the kids chatting away about mm and cm and how there is a relationship between them both. Look out for all of the work we are going to be doing!!!
Welcome back to Term 4! We loved watching the kids come in yesterday and noticed how our rooms have been all changed around. The excited chatter was very cool to hear.
Term 4 is a hat Term and our children need their hats asap. We head outside at least 5 times a day and all kids need to be covered with a sunhat as this is school policy. I would also strongly recommend coming to school with sunblock on as well.
Take a look at our happy friends during brain break with their hats on:
