Term 4, Week 9
It is Retirement Week. We have used our snidges to buy treats to use throughout the week. It's our payback for being amazing this year.
Some signed up to meet Mrs Mabey's son's good mate Ruben Love (Hurricanes, Maori All Blacks, All Blacks). A super role model.
Some of us spent big to make our own ice cream sundae!
Ben designed a new sleigh for Santa!
Lolly cake making with Mrs Mabey's daughter Nadia was a good buy!
Nadia had these beautiful dancers create a lyrical dance.
Check it out in the video, we were very impressed.
Chocolate milkshakes were a very popular choice to spend snidges on.

Term 4.... Week 7
This week, the Year 2 & 3's spent 3 days having plenty of fun with Miss Bradshaw, while the Year 4's also had 3 days of fun, including a Sleepover at school! We make silly skits using dressups, we made Drive in Car boxes to watch a movie in, we played Midnight at Ahimate Park, we played Yoshi with adults in the evening, we ate a lot, and we spent a day at the Lido. So much Epic Fun.
Term 4... Week 6
The sun came out so we took advantage of it and started swimming in the heated school pool!
It is also time for summer sport so after some "Dice Cricket" in Maths, we practiced our skills with bat and ball.
The next day the rain was back, not to worry we enjoyed Lego, Dominoes and the Marble Racer with our friends.
Term 4... Week 5
Breaking News.... Four children have made it to Level 4 of our Nga Matapono Pins! This is a huge achievement. They are showing excellence in all areas. Level 4 allows you to run a class game, and to go home without being released, straight after the end of day Pou. Thank you for setting the bar high Reid, Matthew, Jorja and Anika.
Athletics Day! We are so proud of your effort and achievements.
Week 4, Term 4
Thank you to Ella's family for donating your red couch! We are loving snuggling up on it and it even inspired some cool writing from us!
Have you ever played the "STAY, SWAP, STEAL" card game? We love it. Deal 3 cards each. Once everyone has had their turn (did you stay, swap, or steal) reveal to find out who has the highest amount.
Week 3, Term 4
Congratulations Te Motu on running your 3rd very successful Quiddage. I was blown away by the amount of work you had put into creating products to sell. You have all improved so much with your customer service, teamwork, and money counting skills. Your stalls looked amazing. Tino Pai! We have one more quiddage to go on Friday 22 November.
Week 2, Term 4
Quiddage is back! We went shopping at the Pounamu Atawhai Quiddage yesterday. There were some excellent bargains on offer! Now we need to get creating for our Quiddage this coming Friday!
Proud of our Poems! We have been reading, writing and presenting poems. We have discovered it is a lot of fun the way words can be played around with. Presenting our work nicely and reading aloud are skills that will take us a long way.
Welcome to Term 4!
We have plenty to look forward to with 2 more Quiddages in Week 3 and 6; Athletics day in Week 5, Sleepover in Week 7, "Retirement Day" in Week 8, and of course the epic end of year Right Choice Day.
In our first week back, Mrs Mabey was missing! She returned on Friday with plenty of news to share about her time in Singapore, Dubai and Portugal. We started training for athletics. And got right back into Opt Ins with some of us choosing to make "fortune tellers".

Week 9 and it is nearly Show Time!
Look out for Pae Ake in Act 3. Our scene is set in the Tararua Ranges - where "the hilltops are alive with movement". Some of us created an artwork with this mind. Expect to be blown away by our acting, dancing and COSTUMES! Mrs Pederson and Mrs Whitta have remembered the sewing skills their own mums taught them - the results are looking amazing.
Te Wiki O Te Māori - Māori Language Week - and we continued to explore Te Reo. It was exciting to discover our Māori name using "Kupu my name". We read a selection of children's books in Te Reo and English, realising we could understand more than we thought we could.
There was a tiny bit of good weather - so we got out the tennis gear and had a go at finding correct technique to hit a good shot to our buddy.
Week 8- bigger than ever!!
In between our Core Learning and Production Practices, we re-discovered the joy of STEM:- "Create a chocolate bar packaging that customers would be very tempted to buy". A flurry of teamwork, creativity and problem-solving filled the room.
We had some weird and wonderful wigs and hairstyles turn up on Wig Wednesday! This is a great cause, and our school proudly raised nearly $600 for Cancer Research. Ryleigh Carter, Year 6, spoke of her incredible cancer journey over the past 6 years. She is an inspiration of positivity to us all.
If we pack up in time, we really enjoy playing "Beat the Buzzer". Blake is the man to beat, he is real fast at naming category items starting with any letter!
A highlight was watching the School Production 2022 "Kiwi Tales". We delighted in seeing ourselves on the screen. This helped us to understand what to expect in just 2 weeks time when we perform at the Regent! We saw that actors with big movements and expressions look so good on stage.
We ended the week with a rock concert! "Epic Music" gave us a demonstration of musical instruments and styles. We experienced our own "Rave", check it out below!
Finally, we have been learning how to write convincing "Persuasive" arguments. Matthew shows us how strong vocabulary and well-detailed reasons help to convince our reader to agree with our point of view.
Week 7...
Check out how good we sound with our weekly Tuesday Music sessions!
A Sneak Preview of us practising our Production Dance outside in the sun!
Amazing costumes being whipped up for all our young actors and actresses!

Happy Daffodil Day!
👯Week 6 👯
Practices for the Production at the Regent are in full swing! Birds, Clouds, Deer, Mushrooms and more are looking forward to their time to shine! Practicing the song and dance at home would be a brilliant way to make sure we look amazing on stage!
We love to sit with our buddies and just draw. Whenever we have worked hard and really need a break, we get out our Sketch Books and get Creative.
We held our last Quiddage for this term. It is so exciting for all of us. This time, Miss Bradshaw's whanau got to come and spend some snidges. We want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all adults who helped children get organised to sell homemade goodies. There is so much learning involved including displaying, risk-taking, problem-solving, and plenty of real-life maths. There is one more quiddage next term. We are building up very healthy bank accounts for the end of year Retirement Auction.
Week 5:
One of our favourite Math Warm Ups is "Card Face Off". A great way to practise basic facts. Turn over 2 cards and the first person to add (or subtract or multiply) them, gets to keep them.
We have been honing our large ball skills in daily PE. It is clear to see confidence improving. Soccer, netball and basketball games are enjoyed by all, as we put these skills into practice.
It is Week 4 and Quiddage has begun!
Most of us could barely sleep the night before....
but just look at what we achieved:
Week 3, Term 3 - Excitement Plus!
We started weekly music lessons with "Epic Music". This is hugely popular and we look forward to growing our musical knowledge, rhythm, and love for music.
We explored another popular Maori past-time -knuckle bones (kōrua). We need practice!
Putting forward our favourite "sentence of the week" from our writing books is a great way to share our very clever writing styles.
Mrs Mabey's whanau finally got to spend (or save) their hard earned "snidges" at the Quiddage (market) held by Pounamu Atawhai. We were absolutely blown away by the amazing products and services on offer. It was very exciting. Next Friday, it is our turn to sell the products and services we have been preparing at home.
Yay! We won the Tamatea trophy for having the tidiest cloak bay! Our latest idea of making our own name tags has been a big help. If your bag is spotted open, or shoes very untidy, you can get grotted!!! (get snidges removed from your bank account)
Week 2 of Term 3
On Fridays, we write a diary about what has been happening. It is a nice quiet time to get our thoughts down and practice our writing. Today some of us read our diary to the camera.
The New Carpet in the Hall is fabulous! We got our groove on and practiced our dance moves.
One of our Art Opt ins was trying out some Graffiti style word art which was a good skill to learn.
Check it out!....
Term 3 with our new look Pae Ake/Te Motu!
Miss Bradshaw and Mrs Mabey think you are a seriously good looking bunch!
What happened in Week 1 of Term 3?
In Te Ao Maori time we worked together to learn some traditional string patterns.
We got excited about the 2024 Olympic Games and came up with medal and uniform designs.
On Friday we joined back up with all our Pae Ake friends and opted into either gardening or art.
Check it out!....
Week 10... That's a Wrap for Term 2! Wow how can we be half way through the year. In our final week, we proudly published our Matariki stories, finished up gymnastics, and played a few rounds of "Uno" in between the fabulous talents on show during Right Choice Day. See you all next term!
Matariki Story-Writing
By Aria:
Once upon a time there were two girls named Aria and Leenaa. Aria was a shy and sleepy girl. Leenaa was a brave, good girl. This is a story about the time the girls transformed into two famous stars - Waita and Waiti.
One fine night Waita and Waiti went to a place called Aotearoa. Waiti and Waita saw a light. Waita and Waiti walked around the place. Waita said "this big town is cool!" But then, Waita and Waiti lost their map. Waiti and Waita looked around. Waiti saw something. Waiti went to see what it was but it wasn't the map. Waiti said "oh no, we are not going to find that map Waita!". So Waiti and Waita went to look for it again. It was almost night and Matariki was mad because Waiti and Waita lost the map. Finally, near a karaka tree, Waita found the map. Waiti and Waita raced to the sky before Matariki got really mad at Waiti and Waita.
By Leani:
There were once two best friends named Anika and Leani. Anika is smart and really cool, and Leani is smart and funny. They lived In Papaioea, right here in Aotearoa. One starry night Anika and Leani gazed up at Matariki as they lay on the light green grass. Anika said "I wish I was a star."
CRAAAASH! "What was that?" said Anika. Hiwa-te-rangi and Wai-puna-rangi were right in front of the girls. Wow! Leani and Anika were shocked. Hiwa-te-rangi ad Wai-puna-rangi transformed into hummans. Leani and Anika were unsure where they came from. Anika said "you're the Matariki stars:". Wai-puna-rangi said "All of Matariki is gone!" Those nasty fairies (Mrs Mabey and Mrs Kenyon) took all the Matariki stars from Ranginui. And Matariki is happening tomorrow." So Leani and Anika discovered where the nasty fairies had kidnpapped the Matariki stars. Anika roared at those nasty fairies. "Put the Matariki stars back where they belong." When Leni and Anika went home they found a delicious chocolate fountain and a never ending maths book. Was it a Matariki gift?
By Siena:
Once upon a time there were two kids named Thea and Siena. Thea liked to colour puppy pictures, and Siena liked to Oma (run) and sprint and do races with Thea. She loved races because Siena mostly won.
"Thea" shouted Siena. "Come have a race with me!" "Coming" said Thea. "On your marks, get set, go!" Wait..... what is this.... The girls gazed at the sky and saw stars falling. There were three of them. "Arrrr they are going to fall on us!" They were speeding from the sky so fast that we didn't even know they were moving. THUMP!! The stars fell from the sky. Thea and Siena fell on the ground. They were shocked when they sat up. Siena and Thea saw that the stars were Waiti, Waita and Waipuna-a-rangi. How are we going to get them back up?" "I know how" said Thea. "We can build a massive kite to fling them back up into the beautiful night sky. Come on let's get on to it!" Thea and Siena finally finished the kite using flax and bamboo. Siena put the stars on the kite and the grateful stars got whizzed back to their space up in the sky.
By Reid:
Once upon a time there were two children named Reid and Matthew. Reid was cool and fast and Matthew was tall and smart. Both of them lived in Aotearoa.
One cold and stormy night Waiti and Waita went playing near the lake. Reid and Matthew were playing there too. A really really deep lake. "Hey Matthew, what's this"? Reid asked. It is a bit of crumbled star". "OW - HELP - HELP. -HELP!" "What was that?" said Matthew. It was Waiti ad Waita - they were drowning. Reid said "do you need any help?" "YES" shouted Waita star. Waiti was drowning. The boys couldn't pull her up. Matthew said "wait I have a plan." "What is Waiti's favourite food?' "HOT DOGS!" "Hot dogs huh? Yes - Matthew had a hot dog in his bag, and a fishing rod too. Now - let's do it." The boys pulled Waiti - but they couldn't do it. Reid said "wait - everyone stop holding on." Then Reid ran super fast. Waiti came flying out! "Yay we did it!" Thank you so much - here have my chocolate bar" said Waita. MMMM delicious!
By Anika:
There once were two children named Anika and Leenaa. Anika is a kind, smart girl. Leenaa is brave and good. One dark night, Leenaa and Anika went on an evening stroll at the Arena. The girls looked up in the sky "Aue!" Leenaa shouted. "All the stars are missing! Without Matariki or Puanga, we can't tell when winter is coming." The girls went to find those naughty Patupaiarehe (fairies that steal stars). Patupaiarehe don't like the burning sun so the girls searched a cave next to the Manawatu River in Aotearoa. Inside, the girls heard giggling. "It's those Patupaiarehe! The Patupaiarehe stole the stars!" Anika heard a noise. BANG. BANG. BANG. The Patupaiarehe were smashing the stars. Leenaa and Anika knew the Patupaiarehe were going to hide the stars among the rocks and then turn the stars into Korowai (cloaks). So Anika stayed near those naughty Patupaiarehe while Leenaa wet to find a net. 2 hours later Leenaa finally returned. Anika was crying... "the Patupaiarehe have already gone to the cold Manawatu River to hide the mashed up stars! We have to get the white stars and glue them together quickly!" So the girls set off to the Manawatu River. When Anika and Leenaa got there the sneaky Patupaiarehe were about to hide the stars. Leenaa quickly threw the large net over them. It turned out that the Patupaiarehe were actually Mrs Mabey, Mr Carter, Mr Bron and Mrs Best. Leenaa and Anika put the Patupaiarehe in Jail and got to work glueing the stars back together. Clever Leenaa and Anika threw the stars back into the sky just in time for Matariki and the Maori New Year.
By Leila:
There was once two best friends called Charlie ad Leila. Charlie is a nosy, adventurous girl, Leila is a smart, curious girl.
One misty night when the two girls were walking, they noticed something shining brightly in the sand. When the girls got closer, Leila realised it was a star. "Charlie, I know what it is, it's a star!" There wasn't just one star, but.... two stars! Waipuna-rangi and Waiti. "What happened to you?" asked Charlie. "It's not what happened to us, its what happened to Hiwa-i-te-rangi and Waita. We have no idea where our sisters are." said Waiti. "All of us were just playing hide n seek. Matariki is so worried about them. "
So the 4 walked to the Manawatu River, Te Manawa and lots of other places. The last place the 4 walked to was a cave. In the cave was Hiwa-i-te-rangi ad Waita. It was time to get the stars home. The 6 walked all the way back home and make a slingshot out of wood and string. Charlie bravely pulled the lever. BOING! The 4 stars flew back to the sky. From that day on, the stars never played hide n seek again.
By Ayaan:
There was once 2 children called Ayaan and Jake. Jake was shy and strong. Ayaan was playful and sometimes shy.
One night, Ayaan and Jake were walking around the Esplanade. The boys lay down on the green grass ad looked up at the stars. Ayaan said "wow! the whetu are beautiful!" Jake said "Aue, they are!" The boys counted the number of stars. There were whitu (7). Oh no" said Ayaan. "There is supposed to be 9 stars." Ayaan and Jake had no chance to waste. They had to find the two missing whetu. First the boys went to the Manawatu Awa. But the boys couldn't find Ururangi and Tupuarangi. So the boys looked around the area until they gave up. The boys wondered where the stars could be. Jake thought of a plan. The plan was for the boys to look up in the sky and go right under the stars. Then they could find the two stars and take the stars back to safety. So as the two boys kept looking for the two missing stars the boys peeked inside a cave and found a taniwha, guarding the two missing stars. The boys made a trap to catch the taniwha. They called him outside, and he got stuck in the trap. The boys shouted "Yay!" Jake and Ayaan got the stars free and sent them back home.
🥰Manawatia a Matariki🥰

The meerkat lives in big burrows dug by the meerkats. The Burrows have a lot of entrances.
Giraffes, by Daisy
Giraffes are beautiful animals. Read on to learn more about Giraffes.
Let me tell you about Giraffes features. Giraffes have very long necks so they can reach high leaves. Also they have long skinny legs which help them run away faster from prediators.
Giraffes have brown spots that help camouflage in the brown desert. Naughty males fight over the females by hitting their necks together.
Let me tell you what Giraffes eat. Giraffes eat prickly trees but giraffes have strong tongues so their tongues don’t get damaged.
Black Bears, by Ivey-Roux
.
Black bears are cool.

Penguins slide for fun, but they actually slide for a reason - to get away from their predators. Penguins' predators are Orcas and Seals. Penguins are very fast at sliding on their tummies.
Do you know why Penguins have feathers? Penguins live in a very cold place called Antartica. It is very cold outside but Penguins have feathers to keep them warm.
Penguins have a beak like a bird, they have feathers like a bird, and wings like a bird.... but Penguins can't fly.
By Thea
Penguins are good at sliding, their feathers keep them warm, and they have many bird features. Read on to learn more.
Penghuins are really good at sliding, and it's fun for them. The real reason penguins slide is to quickly get away from their predators, like orcas and seals. Penguins are the sliding champions becaus they are so fast at sliding on their tummies.
Penguins feathers keep them warm and cozy. That's why penguins live in cold places like Antartica. Penguins keep warm with their feathers. Penguins feather are like heaters.
Penguins are birds because they have wings, feathers and beaks. However they are different to birds because penguins can't fly. Did you know kiwi cannot fly too?

Week 4: St John's Visit - A very worthwhile session
Our New Inquiry - He Ara Kotahi
Mr Bron has tasked each team with learning about a special place in Papaioea, Palmerston North. Pae Ake is looking forward to sharing their learnings about the beautiful and popular He Ara Kotahi bridge, just down the road. Te Motu were a hive of activity when the 15 minute timer went on to construct their own newspaper bridge! Mr Pike asked us our ideas for creating as an alternative way across the river. Well, we had labelled drawings of Underwater tunnels, Slingshots, Flying foxes and other Obstacle Courses as potential ideas from our Creative Councillors.
Friday Creativity In Action - Create a Sculpture for Pae Ake!
In Week 3 of Term 2 we....

Term 2
Week 1- School started with a Bang as we got straight into training for the Cross Country which will be held in Week 5. We run 3 times a week. The teachers are yelling encouragement, and Mrs Mabey runs with us. Each day a trophy is awarded to the Runner of the Day. Jorja received the trophy for showing real perserverence when the going is getting tough. Wednesdays are fun because we get to do the Fitness Dice and we hardly even realise we are getting our heartbeats pumping.
We still look forward to Fridays when we join Pae Ake for Opt Ins followed by Dance. This week Mrs Mabey let us try out some colourful magic with paper towels. Some of us are saving this as a Mothers Day surprise, so we won't give away too much....
Week 10 - Each child was tasked with a Statistics Challenge. They each had to decide on a topic to collect data on; prepare and conduct a survey; present data in a table, pictogram and bar graph; and report back their findings. We discovered the most and least popular colours, school subjects, take-aways, birthday months, jobs at home, and much more! Everyone did an amazing job of this task, from start to finish.
Week 9 - In Maths, we are learning about multiplication and division. It is important that we understand the concept, so here we are making different equations using counters. Sometimes we sit in formations such as 4 rows of 6, another fun way to reinforce timestables. In Literacy, we often enjoy big books. We had a go at making our own simple books and we look forward to sharing these with children from Piako Rata.
Week 8 - Some Technology Challenges this week. Mr Pike introduced The Rube Goldberg machine - a contraption designed to perform a simple task in a complicated way! Well we had plenty of motivated akonga up for this challenge. Then, Mrs Mabey wondered if we could help the Easter Bunny deliver eggs quickly this year by way of the "Egg Drop Experiment". Squeals of delight and anguish could be heard as some eggs survived and some .... broke.
Week 7 - We all went home buzzing on Friday knowing our diligence had paid off and Te Motu won the "Tamatea Trophy". This trophy is awarded every 2 weeks to the team with the tidiest cloakbay! The sense of pride was awesome. This week we also got the school bikes out and practiced our cycle safety skills, knowing everyone is at different levels as cyclists. Finally - check out some of our writing! We really enjoy our writing sessions and it gives a real sense of achievement when we get to publish our stories with our best handwriting, or using our growing keyboard skills, or even videoing ourselves reading our stories aloud.
Week 6- We are all buzzing about our new Science Inquiry. This week the young scientists in Te Motu explored the Viscosity of different liquids (measuring the liquid's resistance to flow). We made oobleck and then slime (using a little too much food colouring), to explore changes in physical properties. It was fantastic to hear little voices chatting about their wonderings, predictions, their observations, and their conclusions. We look foward to moving into Pae Ake next week for further science investiations.
On Wednesday, the Year 4s all walked to the Lido to compete in the Swimming Sports. Everyone had a go at different races and it was a fabulous day. Special mention to our own Leenaa who was a stand out . We cheered loudly for her when she was only one of two competitors in the Open Butterfly, winning strongly. Swimming at school will continue until the end of Term One, to take advantage of the heated pool. Our lessons are Mondays and Tuesdays. We have a free swim on Thursdays and Fridays.
Week 5 - We are right into the swing of things now in Te Motu. Routines are well in place and check out some of the cool things we get up to on Fridays....
At this week's Class Meeting, we had Job Monitors to pay and change. We checked our Pins and Snidges. We made special mentions of people being outstanding. Finally we picked 2 names out of the "Kindness Jar."
In recognition of Sea Week, some of us opted to learn a little about Puffer Fish. Here is Alyssa and Aria painting their own beautiful Puffer Fish.
Friday is Strand Maths. We are learning to tell the time.
Worksheets, buddy practice, Bingo are some of the ways we practice our knowledge in Time.
Week 4 - Congratulations on shining in your Assembly Pae Ake! The large audience enjoyed hearing about what you have been up to.🥰
Week 3 - It was wonderful to see so many whanau come to our Shared Lunch. The children were very excited to share their Plays and did an incredible job, displaying many of our Nga Matapono values of courage, resilience and risk-taking to perform in front of an audience. The food was simply delicious as well! We were also thrilled to begin "Friday Opt Ins" with Pae Ake. There were tough decisions to make when choosing from time in the Outdoor Garden, a Paper Technology challenge, a 3D Drawing Skill, and Scratch Art. After that we needed to let it all out with some fun dance in the hall all together. What a way to finish the week!
Week 2 has been all about Te Motu really starting to gel. Finding new people to work and play with, learning routines, and giving ourselves opportunities to be the best that we can be. Building that sense of belonging will set us up for a great year of positive outcomes.
We are really looking forward to showing parents what Te Motu is all about this Friday, at our shared lunch at 12.30pm. See you there!
Week 1: In Te Motu, we had 2 wonderful days learning new routines that will help things run smoothly. We are looking forward to being a class that tries hard to make sure everyone is feeling good about themselves. "He waka eke noa", we are all in this together, is our theme throughout the day when we are trying our best to make this a great year.
We got straight into "The 13 Storey Treehouse" book, which sparked our imaginations to write about what our own treehouse designs might be. Take at look at what some of Te Motu children wrote:
Daisy:
My epic treehouse would have a water slide. At the end of the slide, you go through a shark tank. You are going to love this because I have a jail in my treehouse too! I have a water park and it is called Splash Planet. It has a water fountain made of juice. You can get a cup and put it in the water fountain. It is the world's best treehouse!
Siena:
My treehouse has the best beds. There is an ice-cream stand. It is 3 stories high and to have a house tour it is 6 bucks! Make sure you swim in my sparkling clean water park! We put the sprinkler under the tramp. It is sooooo fun you should come!
Charlie:
I have the most epic treehouse ever. It love it so much. It even has a gigantic ice cream fountain in the centre of my treehouse. On the top storey I have a big heart pool and it even has a very very high diving board. The most fun thing in my treehouse is the maze to get into my treehouse. The maze is very difficult. It has 4000 stories.
Leenaa:
My cold, wintery treehouse will have a gigantic snow machine, so it can snow inside. But first, I need to gather up all of the equipment and place them all outside. My treehouse will have light blue patterning on it. The most exciting thing about my treehouse is that if you press a button on the slide, it rains marshmallows in your mouth whenever you are hungry on the slide. Doesn't it make you want to go to my treehouse? Just imagine it being just right next to you. Enjoy the tour of my wintery treehouse.
