Creative Wellness focuses on a person's creative impulses, ideas, and expression through different mediums and their ability to find joy, clarity, self-expression, and satisfaction through creative outlets. Someone who is creatively well participating in various arts and cultural experiences to understand and appreciate themselves, their environment, and their imagination.
Expressing emotions and views through the arts is a great way to relieve stress. Students at RISD spend all day making and creating, so this might seem like an easy step. However, keeping up with the constrained demand of creativity can be draining and result in burnout. When imagination becomes the primary demand of your work, it might cause anxiety and stress, which is not what you went to art school for.
A creative outlet outside of your school projects might be a starting point for achieving creative wellness. This may mean many different mediums. For example, cooking a fancy meal, making collages with your friends, playing instruments, drawing for fun, dancing, or doing performance art. When you have creative outlets that do not overlap with your academic performance, it can relieve stress rather than induce stress.
This dimension can help you be more confident in your Occupational Wellness and strengthen your Spiritual Wellness.
Student Organizations: Joining or creating a student club is a good source for an extracurricular creative outlet. You may also find a community that can support your interests!
Go to involved.risd.edu to learn more about different clubs
You can also attend Brown Student clubs for other clubs that RISD may not provide
Attend Artist Talks and Academic Events: Every semester departments will hold one to two major related artist talks. Going to these events may widen your horizon of what it is like outside the studio and help you seek out different opportunities
Look for more information about upcoming talks in your department or check involved.risd.edu
Start a side project: Whether this is a crochet hat you have been working on for two years, or a stool you made during your free time, having a “work-in-progress” side project that has no deadline or purpose can be healing for some
