Week of July 10th Learning Academy Sessions

Below is a list of sessions and descriptions offered during the week of July 10th.  All courses will run Monday-Thursday from 8:30-11:30 unless otherwise noted.  

Computer Science and Technology

Coding - Mr. DeFeo

Ramapo High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 9:00 AM

In this course, students will learn how to create interactive web apps in Javascript. Students will master programming basics, including variables and expressions, if statements, loops, and functions. We will also explore advanced applications, including graphics and digital electronics. No prior programming knowledge is required. This course will help you prepare for year-long Computer Science courses in high school, including AP Computer Science. If you might be interested in programming but have little or no coding experience, this is the course for you. This course will run from 9:00-12:00pm.

English

ELA 9 Bootcamp - Mrs. Copeland
Ramapo High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 8:30 AM
This is a course for incoming freshmen designed to provide students with the critical reading, writing, and study/organizational skills to more smoothly adjust to the expectations of a high school English course. Some of the skills that will be addressed include close reading, vocabulary in context, and critical analysis, as well as organizational skills with technology.

College Essay Bootcamp - Mrs. Wiener

Indian Hills High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 8:30 AM

This course is designed for rising seniors (Class of 2024), but rising juniors wishing to get a head start on their college essay ideas are welcome to attend. The course will cover the entire writing process for the college personal statement, based on thoroughly researched best practices, as well as years of feedback from college admissions representatives from across the nation. Topics will include effective brainstorming for the college essay, the two main types of college essays, what outlining should really look like, drafting & revising with the college admissions audience in mind, do’s and don’ts of college essays, and a brief look at supplemental essays and the dreaded “Why Us” college supplemental essay.

Mathematics

Algebra 1 Bootcamp - Ms. Vitale
Ramapo High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 8:30 AM

In this course, students will review important concepts in preparation for their Algebra 1 class, including order of operations, algebraic properties, and solving linear equations.  In addition to direct instruction, students will review concepts using technology and student-centered activities.

Geometry Bootcamp - Ms. Monterey
Ramapo High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 8:30 AM

In this course, students will review and master Algebra 1 concepts from last year that they will be using in Geometry, such as factoring, PEMDAS, graphing linear equations, simplifying radicals (pythagorean theorem), and finding basic shapes perimeter, area, and circumference. In addition to direct instruction, students will work collaboratively with each other to complete fun activities involving these concepts. 


Algebra 2 Bootcamp - Ms. Fischetto
Indian Hills High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 8:30 AM

In this course, students will review important Algebra 1 concepts in preparation for their Algebra 2 classes.  In addition to direct instruction, students will review concepts using technology and student-centered activities, focused on concepts such as graphing, linear equations, and factoring and solving quadratics.

Science

Marine Biology - Ms. Miller

This course takes a hands-on approach to studying the ocean and its inhabitants. We will take an in-depth look at the properties of the ocean that make it a unique living environment and how those properties impact the creatures living there.


Scientific Writing and Lab Reports - Mr. Wadhams

In this session, students will review and/or learn how to conduct scientific laboratory experiments and learn to write a proper lab report in preparation for both Chemistry and Physics. In addition to using various forms of instruction such as gamifying, student-paced, and collaborative team work in order to review the concepts of writing a scientific lab report with the use of technology. 

Social Studies

AP US History Writing Bootcamp for Incoming Sophomores - Mr. Paravati

Stressed about enrolling in AP US History? Not sure what to expect? The APUSH Writing Bootcamp for Incoming Sophomores is designed to answer your questions, address your concerns, and give you time to familiarize yourself with the exam and course requirements before entering class in September. The course will introduce you to the writing requirements for the exam and the College Board rubrics for free response questions (DBQs, LEQs, and SAQs). You will be able to practice the historical writing skills required for the District’s course and the exam itself, like thesis-writing, document analysis, and source analysis. You will also have time to read sample responses from previous exams, as well as the opportunity to practice writing your own with real-time feedback and advice. In short, the course is designed to work for you, the new APUSH student, by providing a low-pressure opportunity to begin developing the skills needed to succeed in the District’s course and in the College Board exam during your junior year.  This course will run daily from 9:00am-12:00pm. 

Visual and Performing Arts

Creative Art through Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture - Ms. Higbie
Indian Hills High School, Please report to the front of the building / main entrance by 8:30 AM

In this course students will be building upon their prior art knowledge as well as exploring new techniques in the art studio.  Students will work to develop their skills in one of the following mediums; drawing, painting, and/or Ceramics & Sculpture.  The week-long course will consist of conceptualizing an idea, planning the idea, and creating their work of art in the medium of their choice. Students will be given a list of prompts at the beginning of the week.
