"GCSE Dance is an amazing option to pick for many reasons. I initially picked it as I was interested in dancing and found it exciting – this is a great reason to choose dance as I’ve improved technically so much and so has everybody who has taken it so far! What I’ve also really enjoyed is that it is a really uplifting environment where the Dance teachers fully support every student. Whenever tasks are set, which can be practical or written work, they are looked at by the Dance teachers and we are given thoughtful and helpful feedback. There quickly becomes a feeling of us as a family throughout the whole class and the teachers due to how collaborative parts of the course are. This makes dance a subject that me and everyone else are excited to go to. If you are considering taking this as an option, I think you need a love for dance and dedication to working hard both in physical dancing and theory. A final thing is not to worry if you don’t have much dance experience because as long as you go in ready to learn, the teachers help you quickly pick-up technique and feel comforted; you also will soon feel like a dancer with the special kit and rehearsals".
The Dance GCSE course is aimed towards students who are enthusiastic about dance. Dance is an empowering and powerful form of communication which enables the development of creative, imaginative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacities.
This GCSE has been designed to give students an opportunity to study Dance in both its practical and theoretical setting. It prepares students for further education or a career in the performing arts industry as well as promoting key skills such as leadership and team work. Literacy skills are also developed to a point where students can analyse dance to a high level, expressing their opinions through written work. This compliments all other written subjects particularly English. Students will also learn how to work with others, solve problems and challenge yourself and your imagination.
The course is split into two units; Performance & Choreography, and Dance Appreciation.
Unit 1: Performance & Choreography.
Choreography: Students will learn how to structure and create dances and how to make movements interesting and unique through variations in space, style, pathways and technique. By the end of Year 11 students will need to choreograph a final piece that will display all they have learnt over the course. Students can choose to perform either a solo or a group choreography, of between two to three minutes, choreographed in response to a range of stimuli chosen by the exam board.
Performance: Students will understand how to dance to the best of their ability, learning about projection, extension and style. Students will learn four set phrases and perform two of these as a solo (approx. 1 minute long) and will also perform as either a duet or trio in any dance style (as long as it meets the assessed criteria) based on the other two set phrases (Approx. 3 to 3 and a half minutes long).
The practical unit is marked out of 80 and is worth 60% of the overall GCSE Grade.

"When finalising my decision on attending Riddlesdown, the biggest factor towards picking my next school was dance. Compared to other schools, Riddlesdown to me engaged with this performing art and engulfed it to be a passion of theirs to follow through and inspire students. So when turning to an important decision of picking my options, it wasn’t hard as I already knew one would be dance. Dance brings endless benefits through health, growth and exercise as well as giving you new perceptions and the ability to express and communicate ideas. Within the course you will be able to access this as well as a free space of being able to settle into a new family. Throughout my experience Ms Daly would provide me with personalised feedback of how to achieve the next step as well as a personal guidance in day-to-day worries. She broke down each step of the course to give you the best outcome for your personal experience. Even when I needed that extra time to prepare and finalise my own choreography and performance in the practical side of dance, Ms Daly would give up her own hours in order for me to have professional help and studio space to continue to improve. Choosing dance gave me a sense of excitement to attending school, I would always be eager to get into the dance studio. As when you first receive that of support given to you with your classmates and teachers, you would never want to give it up. Without the encouragement and support I received from Ms Daly, I would never have dreamt to achieve a 9 and follow onto a Performing Arts School. Even when leaving Riddlesdown, I feel like I have found an everlasting home to continue to engage with the communication of dance".
