The Basics
All returning Westwood students will take their Chromebooks home over the summer.
Students must submit a review of his or her device on the Chromebook Wellness Check form available to them April 24, 2019 in Homeroom. We will make an appointment to see any student who is having issues with their device based on the form responses.
The summer take home evaluation process happens April 24-26 to make sure we have time to see every student's Chromebook and to not interfere with end-of-term exams.
Parents who wish to opt-out of the summer take-home program will need to contact Laura Coulter, Westwood's Technology and Learning Coach, in writing at lcoulter@richland2.org.

- Notify parents by letter (freshmen only) and/or Connect-Ed about summer-take home program. (Week of April 8, 2019)
- Opt-out instructions are at the bottom of the letter
- Recruit volunteers to help with Chromebook evaluation process (Week of April 8, 2019)
- Students complete the Chromebook Wellness Check form in Homeroom (April 24, 2019
- Evaluate all students who listed issues on their Chromebook Wellness Check form (April 24-26)
- Notify opt-out students they will be turning their Chromebooks on June 3
- Send home damage sheets for those Chromebooks with minor damage.
- Take up and repair any non-working devices in time for summer take-home
- Opt-out students will turn in their Chromebooks on Monday, June 3, 2019

Students can:
- Take online classes through virtualSC or Richland 2
- Challenge themselves to earn badges while brushing up on or learning new academic skills on Khan Academy
- Take advantage of our fantastic Richland County Library
- Mango Languages
- Lynda.com
- Learning Express
- Digital books
- Free digital music
- Free digital magazines
- Hoopla access for TV shows, movies, and more
- Learn how to code through Code.org or Codecademy.com
- Take a college class for free from EdX.org or Coursera.org
- Participate in an online summer program
- Learn more about the Maker movement
- Make their own movies with WeVideo.com. The district pays for our subscription, so we have extras!

- The $20 Technology Insurance is the district’s protection plan for Chromebooks. It’s per year and and the 2018-19 insurance covers one incident of accidental damage until September 30, 2019 and the student will be responsible for the full cost of repair
- If the Tech Insurance is not paid, students will still take home Chromebooks with the understanding that they are responsible for any damage at the rate of $75 for a minor repair (cracked plastics, missing keys, etc) and $150 for a major repair (system boards or cracked screens).
- Some non-physical issues (connectivity, battery, touch pad) may be repaired without using the Tech Insurance
- There is no Chromebook repair over the summer. Repairs will be handled in August when students return to school
- If the student is transferring out of Westwood during the summer, the Chromebook must be turned in to the School Counseling office. Please get a receipt when you drop a Chromebook off on campus. That is your documentation.
- Note that Richland 2 devices can only be repaired by Richland 2 technicians.
- Mrs. Coulter does not work at Westwood during the summer and will answer emails as she can. lcoulter@richland2.org
