Discovery senior, Madison Han, has been named a top 300 scholar in the Regeneron Science Talent Search—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. A listing of all 300 scholars can be found here. Almost 2,000 students entered the competition this year.
This is an extraordinary accomplishment deserving of much celebration. Madison will receive $2,000, and Spring Valley High School will also receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities.

Discovery Students Excel at 2023 South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) Competition
Seventy-eight Discovery magnet students submitted research papers and presented at the 2023 South Carolina Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) competition held at the Medical University of South Carolina on March 25th. Our students earned a total of 62 awards for their hard work (see the full list here). Congratulations to all of our Discovery students for their dedication and resulting accomplishments. Also, a big congratulations and thank you to these students' research teachers, Ms. Heather Alexander, Ms. Lindsey Rega. Mrs. Michelle Spigner, and Dr. Michelle Wyatt, who spent hours reading research papers, helping with experiments, and encouraging students to persevere!
2023 SCJAS at the Medical University of South Carolina
2023 USC Region II Science and Engineering Fair Awards
Seventy-eight Discovery sophomores and juniors competed in the University of South Carolina Region II Science and Engineering Fair on March 10th, 2023. Each of these students did an outstanding job presenting his/her research to the judges from the University of South Carolina and many other professional organizations. Approximately 200 students from area high schools were interviewed by judges to determine the best of the submitted projects. Our Spring Valley students earned 62 awards! Shrihan Ganesh Babu (11) and Elianna Tracy (10) were awarded the Second Place Male and Female Presidential Awards, respectively, and were recommended to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) as Observers in Dallas, TX in May. Spring Valley High School Named a National Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America
Spring Valley High School’s magnet programs, Discovery and Explorations, seek to provide our students with an innovative, academically challenging experience centered on rigorous mathematics and science education through unique, student-centered research and internship opportunities. Our educators strive to establish meaningful relationships with each student and family, set consistently high expectations for all learners, empower each student with the tools to reach his/her full potential, and continuously inspire exploration, discovery and creativity in our students. Our vision is to develop a well-rounded scholar who has the ability to use scientific inquiry, mathematical tools, and twenty-first century technology skills to succeed and solve problems in our rapidly changing world. Discovery and Explorations will challenge students to embrace diversity and become culturally responsible, caring citizens in the global community.
Dr. Michelle Wyatt and Ms. Kim Bouchey were recognized and received a National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 35th National Conference in Dallas, Texas in April 2023.
To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
