The RVHS Battalion JROTC vision is to instill an ethics-based value system within each young adult that will help them to make better choices in life through the knowledge that every choice, no matter how seemingly simple, will always come with consequences; both Good and Bad and that these choices WILL ALWAYS affect others in their life.
History of Army JROTC & The Blazer Battalion
The U.S. Army ROTC Program originated as part of the National Defense Act of 1916. The principal of maintaining national programs of military training for young citizens attending school was validated during congressional hearings preceding passage of the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964. The program consists of three levels of instruction: The Senior Division; the Military Schools Division, and the High School Division. The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, usually referred to by its short title, JROTC, originated as part of the National Defense Act of 1916.The Army Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (JROTC) began with the passage of the National Defense Act of 1916.
The tradition of combining formal education with military training goes back as far as the ancient Greeks. In the United States, JROTC had its beginning in Norwich Vermont. In 1819, Captain Alden Partridge, a former Superintendent of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, founded the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy in Norwich, Vermont. The academy is now know as Norwich University. Military studies were a major part of the academy's course work. Captain Partridge felt that if his cadets were not prepared to defend their country's rights, their education was not complete. Captain Partridge's Academy was so successful that the idea of combining military studies with regular classes spread to other schools.
Army JROTC has one or more programs in all 50 states, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Federal Republic Of Germany, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Panama totaling over 1,731 high school units.
The Army JROTC Program, the Blazer Battalion, located at Ridge View High School was established in 1995 following application by Richland School District Two to the Department of the Army (DA). A contract was signed between the superintendent of Richland County School District Two and the U.S. Army with each responsible for providing certain support for the conduct of the program.
Although the JROTC Program is conducted in accordance with Army Regulations and in conformance with local school regulations. The course imposes no military obligation upon a cadet beyond the course curriculum.
The Ridge View High School Army JROTC Blazer Battalion is an award winning and accredited program that has been awarded Honor Unit with Distinction since the battalion's inception in 1995.
