Multicultural Literature is a yearlong course designed for students interested in studying various multicultural writers and the relationship of the selected readings to each writer's cultural background. Multicultural Literature will explore different racial ethnicities in the United States, paying particular attention to how the literature explores racism, discrimination, and rises above oppression. In this literature course, students will closely examine the critical relationships of the authors who challenged the discourse of American socio-political policy and commentary to move towards a more socially just and caring world for everyone.

The College preparatory course stresses the advancement of reading and writing skills by the careful and exact evaluation of a survey of American literature and informational texts from early colonial ties to 21st century. Students write essays that focus on thematic structure, sentence variety, and voice. Emphasis will be placed on precise sentences, vocabulary, and conventional grammar and its uses. Assignments are designed for students to think critically and for the concepts to be useful in the world.

This eleventh grade Expository Reading and Writing Course 11 (ERWC 11) engages students in the discovery of who they are as persons, the realization of the ways in which they can participate in society, and their development as critical consumers and effective communicators within society. Students will read a range of literary and nonfiction text genres and produce 10-12 culminating projects, including academic essays, research reports, creative writing and performances, and multimedia presentations, from initial draft to final revision and editing. UC "B" designation approved.

In this course, students will learn journalistic writing styles, techniques and best practices, including AP Style and journalistic ethics (with an emphasis on student press law). Students will participate in extensive reading of current literature and engage in continual critical thinking and analysis of published writing samples. Students will practice creative and expository writing techniques in order to improve overall writing skills. The course will also feature other aspects of student journalism and newspaper production, including but not limited to, editing, photography and design. UC/CSU approval pending. This course can be taken for repeat credit
