Thursday 10/13: Ajax / Greek Tragedy
Read or watch before class:
2. Aristotle, On Tragedy (excerpt)
3. Concept Map, On Tragedy (to help you see the organization of Aristotle's thought)
4. Sophocles, Ajax (in the hard copy of Doerries, All That You've Seen Here is God)
Prepare or organize before class:
Look for in Aristotle: his comments on these principles of tragedy - Plot, Character, Thought, Diction, Spectacle
Look for in Ajax: Identify two of Aristotle's specific principles of tragedy at work in Ajax and come ready to point out specific passages in the play where you see these principles as relevant
Think about: From your perspective, why is the play Ajax still relevant today? Your discussion should bring in at least two examples from the play itself to develop your argument.
