Matisse is often referred to a “Master of Shapes and Color” because of his use of these 2 elements of art in his paintings. Second graders learned about organic and geometric shapes in this unit, how to paint colors and tints or values of those colors. We learned how to compose and paste the organic shapes that we cut out of our painted papers on a background and also how to tell a story and create a title based on our collages.

A Matisse se le conoce con frecuencia como un "Maestro de las Formas y el Color" por el uso de estos dos elementos del arte en sus pinturas. Los estudiantes de segundo grado aprendieron sobre formas orgánicas y geométricas en esta unidad, cómo pintar colores y tintes o valores de esos colores. Aprendimos a componer y pegar las formas orgánicas que recortamos de nuestros papeles pintados sobre un fondo y también a contar una historia y crear un título basado en nuestros collages.

Second graders learned about color, pattern, and line as they explored hot air balloons. We learned about warm and cool colors, and how to draw the shape of the balloon. Everyone enjoyed creating repeat patterns on the balloons. Lastly, we looked at maps of the town of Basalt and glued our balloons on it as if we were flying up above.

Los estudiantes de segundo grado aprendieron sobre el color, el patrón y la línea mientras exploraban los globos aerostáticos. Aprendimos sobre colores cálidos y fríos, y cómo dibujar la forma del globo. Todos disfrutaron creando patrones repetidos en los globos. Por último, miramos mapas de la ciudad de Basalt y pegamos nuestros globos en él como si estuviéramos volando arriba.

2nd Graders looked at the works of famous African American fabric artists such as Harriet Powers and Faith Ringgold to see how artists use art to tell stories. Students then got the chance to show their own story responding to various prompts such as what is your dream for the future or where are you the most happy. Students decorated their individual fabric squares to create a larger quilt which was later gifted to Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale.
