First grade students looked at Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama and her artwork to create an inspired dotted pumpkin piece of their own! Within this lesson students learned about contrast, complimentary (or opposite) colors, and different types of line.

Standard 4: 1. Identify how artists and designers make connections through personal stories between self, family and friends.

Still Life With Apples

First graders studied the shape and form of apples in this unit. We determined, through careful observation, that apples are naturally round and have a dip in them where the stem grows out. Here, our apples are arranged in different positions and overlapped in colorful bowls.

Naturaleza Muerta con Manzanas

Los estudiantes de primer grado estudiaron la forma de las manzanas en esta unidad. Determinamos, a través de una observación cuidadosa, que las manzanas son naturalmente redondas y con un hueco en ellas mismas donde crece el tallo. Aquí, nuestras manzanas están arregladas en diferentes posiciones y puestas en coloridos cuencos.

First grade students created a winter landscape demonstrating their understanding of depth, as subjects at the front of the page or “here” are larger than the objects in the background, which we called “far.” We defined the subjects in the middle portion of the page as “near” which would be bigger than the objects in the background, but not as big as the objects in the foreground. 1st graders also learned a new color theory term: tint, which is adding white to a base color. Finally the students were able to recognize the subject matter of landscape art as scenes from nature.

Standard 3: Invent and Discover to Create: 1. Investigate the properties of materials to support the planning and making of works of art to communicate.

Los estudiantes de primer grado crearon un paisaje invernal que demostraba su comprensión de la profundidad, ya que los temas en la parte delantera de la página o "aquí" son más grandes que los objetos del fondo, que llamamos "lejos". Definimos los sujetos en la parte central de la página como "cerca", que sería más grande que los objetos del fondo, pero no tan grande como los objetos del primer plano. Los estudiantes de primer grado también aprendieron un nuevo término de teoría del color: tinte, que consiste en agregar blanco a un color base. Finalmente, los estudiantes pudieron reconocer el tema del arte del paisaje como escenas de la naturaleza.

February 12th marked the start of Chinese New Year, which is based off of the lunar calendar. 1st graders are doing a unit on Asian art, looking at the porcelain vases from the Ming dynasty and even became art authenticators to tell you how to identify the real Ming vases from the fakes. Additionally students learned about the significance of the cherry blossoms in Japan. This unit connects to history, geography, and even language as students compare our alphabet to other writing systems.

El viernes 12 de febrero marcó el inicio del Año Nuevo Chino, que se basa en el calendario lunar. Los estudiantes de primer grado están trabajando en una unidad sobre arte asiático, mirando los jarrones de porcelana de la dinastía Ming e incluso se convirtieron en autenticadores de arte para decirles cómo identificar los jarrones Ming reales de los falsos. Además, los estudiantes aprendieron sobre la importancia de las flores de cerezo en Japón. Esta unidad se conecta con la historia, la geografía e incluso el idioma mientras los estudiantes comparan nuestro alfabeto con otros sistemas de escritura.
