He started his career as a financial auditor, with 5 years of experience, including a Big 8 accounting firm (Coopers and Lybrand)
Rex’s financial background and passion for forward thinking solutions will be a tremendous asset to advocate for our concerns as your Alderman. As someone who has been involved with local issues, Rex was appointed to the Financial Task Force for District 205 from 2004-2005, making recommendations to the school board after a full review of revenues and expenditures.
Rex has also advocated for sustainable changes and solutions at a local level in Elmhurst. He served on the Sustainability Task Force for the City of Elmhurst from 2015-2016 and has contributed to the Illinois Commerce Commission’s Smart Grid Energy Task Force for Illinois.
Rex has also been committed through the years to Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition as well as the DuPage Clean Energy Coalition where he has worked towards more renewable energy options and efficiency in our local DuPage communities.
Rex Irby has lived in Elmhurst 27 years with his wife Jen where they have raised 5 children. He was attracted to Elmhurst due to its great location with the best access to highways to get to his clients. The school district was the second valuable resource that attracted his family. 28 years ago the Elmhurst property taxes were some of the lowest in the Chicago Metro region and that was the third valuable determinant that is no longer the case today.
In Rex’s spare time he likes to ride his bike on Elmhursts' great bike paths as well as surrounding communities. Eldridge and Salt Creek are another treasure he enjoys and wants protect and foster. Elmhurst Beer club is one of his social gathering outlets along with Elmhurst Cool Cities.
Having their kids involved with the music departments of Jackson, Bryan and York schools was a highlight of their time growing up, with much time spent volunteering with Music Boosters and PTA committees. Now that the kids are grown, Rex is ready and committed to give back to and serve the city that has given so much to his family.
Rex was elected to office 4/8/23 and sworn in 5/1/23 and will serve a 4 year term that expires in April of 2027.
