Although scars are nothing to be ashamed of, Some people choose to cover up scars with tattoos for aesthetic reasons, to forget past traumas or simply because they want to.
Examples of scars that can be covered are but not limited to; self harm, mastectomy, c section and skin graft.
Scars are more unpredictable than non scarred skin. Scarred skin will be a different texture therefore the artist must be very delicate when tattooing them to avoid extra trauma and further scarring.
Scars must be at least 18 months old before they can be tattooed, but they should always be shown to your experienced tattoo artist before they are covered.
Scars need touch ups more than tattoos on unscarred skin due to the different textures of skin.
The tattoo process will more than likely irritate the scar despite how delicate the artist is, making it inflamed and red, this will settle down within the first few days of healing.
Blow outs (ink spreading under the skin creating a blurred line or bruised effect) are more common in tattoos over scars because the skin can be much thinner, the more experienced the artist is with scars, using an artist experienced in scar cover ups will lessen the chances of blow out but unfortunately its always a risk.
The pain on scarred skin varies dramatically, more often than not, it will be more painful than the average tattoo however sometimes the scarred skin, particularly on deep scars will have nerve damage so you may not feel a thing.
Freya takes pride in her scar cover ups, she is extremely experienced and has completed many on countless different types of scars. She has a gentle technique and a calming presence. To start the process of your scar cover up, first fill out our enquiry form. We will then usually invite you to a free consultation where Freya can look at the scar to make sure it is suitable for tattooing, discuss design ideas, estimate how long it will take and give a rough quote (Sometimes this isn't necessary it depends on the type of scars). On the day of the appointment, we will allow plenty of time for the tattoo so that as many breaks as you like can be taken, we will provide you with coffee and soft drinks as and when you please. We use products by biotat that have natural numbing properties to ease the pain.
After 4 weeks, we will invite you to send us a photograph of your tattoo or return to the studio so we can assess how it has healed and see whether it needs a touch up.
Touch up appointments are free and only usually take around an hour. Usually one touch up is enough but more can be arranged as needed.
We usually only give a 3 month period for the customer to get a touch up on their tattoo, however with scars due to the healing time being a little longer and the result being less predictable, with scars the limit is extended to 6 months.
The price of a scar tattoo is the same as a normal tattoo, despite much more work going into cover up tattoos, we believe it is unfair to charge someone extra for something that is out of their control.
