Project Expectations:

My goal is to provide students with fun, creative projects to exercise the Right side of the brain and to help off set all of the screen time! The assignments are chunked into "Parts" My expectation is for students to do at least ONE "Part" a week in a 30 minute sitting. Of course students can put more into it IF they want. I will be grading finished projects to give the students credit for their hard work and amazing talents. If you are still wanting more, feel free to check out other grade levels. You might see something to inspire you there as well.

IF YOU ARE JUST SEEING THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME: No big deal, relax. Just work at a pace that makes it fun for you. When you do get it done please send me a pic to my email. mruppert@resstpaul.org

Enjoy the process! I am happy to answer any questions. Stay Well, Mrs. Ruppert

Art at Home: Abstract Zebra

Students will explore positive and negative space by following the patterns of lines in a Zebra's body.

Remember- this project would take up to 3 class periods in school. Do not do this all in one sitting, but break it up in to 2-3 working 30 minutes or so. I want you to enjoy the process! Have fun!

Materials: White paper, pencil, black marker (crayon will work too!)

Part I- due by4/3 -Find a photo you are interested in. Focus on a section of the photo, not the entire body. Make a light pencil sketch following the lines and patterns inside the body of the zebra. Note that suddenly something so realistic takes on an abstract quality.

Part II-due by 4/17 -Using a black marker, solidify your designs. Keep the lines smooth and intentional.

Part III-Finish up the process-due by 4/24. If you have the materials, cut Zebra out and glue to colored background.

Optional: Email me your finished work. I'd love to see them and post some!!

Self Portrait Study: Wow! Josheph, Brenden, Katelyn, Josh, Keegan

Art at Home: Artist- George Seurat- Pointillism (Do in parts, tentative due date 5/22)

Begin by watching 2 min 30 seconds of video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4hqKPX6d68

This will give you the overview and allow you to see art work in the style.

Materials: Two pieces of paper, pencil, black marker, ruler, crayola color markers, glue stick, scissors

Part I: Look into a mirror and draw yourself as realistically as you can. After drawing the face shape, remember the trick I use by drawing a cross in the face to help line up features.

PartII: With a black marker you will make a series of dots INSTEAD of lines to define the face.

Part III: Divide a second paper into 3" squares, you will need a ruler. Afterwards, cut out your portrait and draw on your paper the outline. This is so you will not have to color under the image. In each of the squares color different sized circles with the color markers.

Part IV: Using your color markers fan out colors from the circles you drew. Look at the color wheel for inspiration. Color a block using; primary colors, secondary colors, complementary colors, warm colors, cool colors, rainbow colors then just go for it on your own. Favorite sports team colors? Once complete glue portrait on top.

Masterpiece!!! Send me a pic!!

Art at Home: A monochromatic landscape study.

Students will draw a landscape, and paint it in layers using only one color, plus the addition of white and black. When you mix the paint with white you are creating a tint and when you mix it with black you are creating a shade.

Materials: Paper, pencil, water, brush and acrylic paints one color, white, black or use your water color set.

Part I: Begin by brain storming. You can see I made a thumbnail sketch of a desert, lake, forrest and dino land. I decided to go coastal. Create a light pencil sketch.

Part II and Part III: Get your paints ready! Your background should be the lightest tint gradually getting darker to the darkest shade in the foreground. Start at the TOP. I gave you two sitting to do this piece. I really loved painting this picture.

Send me a pic! Can't wait to see your ideas!

This art work is cuurently in progress in the Art Room.

Mosaic Letter Design

Students will design a letter through test design. Lightly sketching the design on black paper. Next students will create a contrasting mosaic using colored construction paper. It is important the letter be clearly and intentionally defined by the paper placement.

This art work is currently in progress in the Art Room.

Multi cultural appreciation-Native American Navajo Sand Painting

You may have noticed a common theme of Native American artistic influence in the art room through out the grades. That is due to this year's mural theme! I wanted the entire students to have an appreciation and understanding of the beauty in their culture and works. 7th grade will be studying the designs and significance of the Navajo sand painting. Students will design in the likeness of the art form. Next, sand stations will be set up through out the class room. Students will draw one color onto their sandpaper at a time in glue. Then visit the color they need, sprinkling the sand over the tray. This process is repeated over and over again until complete. You can see how self-control is very much needed as students move all around the room!!

Clay Saint Medallion

Students will design a clay medallion in the likeness of a Saint. Sculpting techniques will be taught as they layer and detail their likeness. The medallions will be fired and metallic paint will finish the process.

Endangered Animals- Scientific Illustration

In light of the devistating fires in Australia, students will researech species of creatures that are endangered. This is to bring awareness to the importance that we are the stewarts of the earth, and be thoughtful as to how we can help make a difference to create a healthier world for all. After their research students choose a creature. Students work from a photograph in a realistic, detailed sketch of their creature. A frame is drawn around their work. For contrast students will use color pencil techniqiues to capture creature in its habitate. On the outside of the frame a pencil will be used to complete the project in grey scale.

Zentangles and Still Life Study

To begin, students will create a background for their still life by dividing a paper into background wall and table. Using a ruler students will divide the background in random angles. The table has a different division. This is all about textures! Looking a variety of line, patters and forms for inspiration students fill the background angles.

Next, on a separate piece of paper students create a symmetrical vase. Using the fruit available students make a realistic sketch to make their fruit bowl. Students will show space and depth in the placement and shading of their fruit.

Students will use watercolors to realistically capturing the colors in their bowl.

Finally, students will cut out fruit bowl and mount it on their background paper!

Students will study the art work of Polish paper cutters. STudents will create a symmetrical Christmas tree, balancing animals, flora and fauna in their design. Sharpies will be used to create a silhouette of their design and acrylic paints will add emphasis to their work. Students understand what it is like to work under a deadline of a real time printer in order to submit their Art to Remember art work on time!
