Project Expectations:

My goal is to provide students with fun, creative projects to exercise the Right side of the brain and to help off set all of the screen time! The assignments are chunked into "Parts" My expectation is for students to do at least ONE "Part" a week in a 30 minute sitting. Of course students can put more into it IF they want. I will be grading finished projects to give the students credit for their hard work and amazing talents. If you are still wanting more, feel free to check out other grade levels. You might see something to inspire you there as well.

IF YOU ARE JUST SEEING THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME: No big deal, relax. Just work at a pace that makes it fun for you. When you do get it done please send me a pic to my email. mruppert@resstpaul.org

Enjoy the process! I am happy to answer any questions. Stay Well, Mrs. Ruppert

Fun with art at home!

A study of profile vs portrait.

Materials: you will need a image of an animal in portrait and profile view. Paper, pencil and color pencils. Crayons work in a bind.

Each part would be equivalent to a 30 minute sitting. Don't try to do it all in one sitting!

Part I- do by 3/3- Students will need to select an animal, could be the family pet! Note the differences between sketching a portrait vs a profile- especially the symmetry.

Lightly combine two images on one piece of paper. You are challenged to make them appear as a part of one composition.

Part II (Finish 1/2 of coloring by 4/17) and Part III- Final project due completed by 4/24. Color pencils may be used to texture and shade the animal.

Can't wait to see your work!! I think I will do my dogs!!

Optional: send me a pic of your work. I'd love to post some.

Roman Mosaics: Claire, Russel, Caroline, Olivia, Ella P.

Art at home: Cross-curricular Art and Social Studies

Roman mosaics (Do in parts, tentative due date 5/22)

Students will look at samples of Ancient Roman mosaics. They will design and create their own mosaic using magazine pages.

This is an awesome video about the discovery of an ancient mosaic. It also happens to be of my favorite Roman mosaics animal examples! I was thrilled to find this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSq5Xc29XPA

Materials: Black or dark background paper, pencil, magazine pages, scissors, glue.

Part I: After looking at a variety of Roman mosaics design yours on a black paper using a pencil or light colored pencil.

Part II: Find pages of colors you will need in magazines. I tore out colors as I looked through the magazine. Then start with ONE COLOR AT A TIME. Cut a strip, glue a small section at a time, cut squares and triangles and fill as you go. Try to fill in the main image, if you need to break it up into another sitting. Store strips in baggies.

Part III: Repeat, filling in background and boarder. Again, you may need to break this up into another sitting and that is fine.

This project turns out beautifully, rather then try to rush through it focus on the quality of smaller sections. If it takes longer it takes longer. The end result is WORTH IT!

Art and Science

Students will study the Panda bear. Use simple shapes to draw a Panda in its natural habituate.

Begin with the informative video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqT-UlYlg1s

Materials: Paper, pencil, photo of panda, sharpie, grey marker or black watercolor to shade.

Part I: Study the Panda and sketch a realistic rendering of the animal in its habitat using a pencil.

Part II: Black line your image. Use a sharpie to to fill in. Shade with either a grey marker or water downed black watercolors paint. I looked up the Chinese letters for panda and duplicated the figures in red sharpie on my picture.

This project is currently in progress in the art room.

Art and Social Studies

Students will create their own scratch off background. First they will select a symmetrical Greek pattern vessel and trace the shape on a piece of heavy paper. Next, they will color with warm or cool crayon combinations super hard- lots of wax-no paper showing. Coming up- even more wax. Students take paraffin sticks and go over the entire vessel again. Students will coat crayon side with a combination tempera and dish soap to make the scratch off.

Students will study resources to find a Greek related theme for their vessel. Using a wooded scratcher the image will be carved into the black. Attention to detail is a must!

This project is currently in progress in the art room.

Cross cirriculium activity with Social Studies

Students will create their own Egytian relief. Students will have resources of Egytian godds and goddesses. Students will study the style of the ancient reliefs and using a foam try draw the image inside. STudents will mix plaster and pour into tray. Once dry, I will spray plaster gold and students will complete with acrylic paint.

Multicultural Appreciation- Inuit Animal designs.

Students will look at the amazing designs of the Inuit people. Students will choose an animal, lightly draw the shape, creating internal contrasts with patterns, designs, and colors. Finished works will be cut out and matted.

Multi cultural appreciation- Inuit carving

Students will look at the beautifully sculpted work of the Inuit people. Students will make an orthographic scalled drawing to assist in their carving. Once complete they will cut out side and use as a templete by drawing image on a bar of ivory soap. Students then may begin to carefully carve. Pottery tools, plastic knives and paper clips will be used to carve and shape. STudents glue their drawings and carvings on a tile when complete.

6th grade students will add to their collection of Jesse tree ornaments by creating the "Star." The Star represents Jesus's birth on December 25th.

Artist stuy: Franz Marc

Cross circular activity with Social Studies:

Students will visit stone cave paintings of ancient man. They will use originals to sketch out a well balanced composition. Next, studying the art work of Franz Marc, students will use chalk to create an abstract version of their stone cave paintings.

Artist study: Pablo Picasso

Students will study the simple lines of Papblo Picasso's dove and create their own simple line sketch. They will use lines, shapes, patters in acrylic paint to enhance the background. 9/10
