District Wide Update: ALL students should be practicing their math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) on a DAILY basis. It is expected that third graders master multiplication facts through the times ten table by the end of third grade. Thank you for your support in this matter at home.
It is very important that your child has a place at home to keep his/her math materials. Throughout the year I will send home a variety of materials including lots of math games and materials to assist with homework and fact fluency. I recommend either keeping the materials in a folder or a shoebox so the materials are handy when they are needed. Be on the lookout for additional materials being sent home that can be added to this special box/folder.
Students use a program called Bridges in Mathematics. It is a comprehensive program that covers the Common Core State Standards for Math in a manner that is rigorous, engaging, and accessible to all learners. It focuses on developing students' deep understanding of mathematical concepts and ability to solve complex problems. Students will have direct instruction, exploration, group work, games, and other tasks throughout each unit.
This is probably a very different approach to mathematics than you or I learned while in school. We focus more on the how and why a problem is solved (the process) more than the end result. Students will gain a deeper understanding of mathematics, and not simply memorize an algorithm that they probably don't understand. If your child is really struggling on a regular basis please let me know. Most homework will be a review of what has already been taught in class.
