Students will continue their study of phonological awareness. This means that the spoken language consists of different parts. Students will learn about different sounds in our language and how those sounds are spelled. Students will not only learn a word's structure but also an understanding of its meaning. Students will be exposed to high-frequency "trick words" that are very common but don't always follow the typical rules. Third graders will continue to learn to scoop words together to help with fluency and be encouraged to think actively while reading to self-monitor their understanding. Automaticity of handwriting, spelling, and punctuation will be encouraged. Manuscript writing has been mastered and cursive letter formation will be taught with verbal cues, repetition, skywriting, tracing, and writing practice.
