Inspiring Minds, Hearts and Spirits
MR STEPHEN DWYER | Term 3, Week 10
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of our College community,
As we come to the end of another term, we pause to reflect on what has been another full and engaging time in the life of our College community. The weeks have been marked by rich learning experiences, vibrant co-curricular and sporting activities, moments of prayer and reflection, and opportunities to gather and celebrate our family spirit together. Each moment has contributed to the spirit of our community and our aspiration to enliven life, faith and learning experiences of the students in our care.
St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, gave the Marist family a simple but powerful image, the “three violets” to express the spirit of simplicity, humility, and modesty. These violets, which grow quietly in the French countryside, are small and often hidden, but their fragrance is unmistakable. For Marcellin, they became a symbol of the Marist way: doing good quietly, with presence and care, without seeking recognition.
At Red Bend, this image continues to guide us. Simplicity reminds us to focus on what truly matters in educating young people: clarity, consistency, and genuine care. Humility grounds us in the understanding that education is a partnership, where we walk alongside students and families, recognising each young person’s unique gifts. Modesty encourages us to act with integrity and balance, to celebrate achievements while keeping service to others at the heart of all we do.
Together, these three violets capture the essence of what it means to be Marist. They invite us all staff, students, and families to live with a spirit of quiet presence, to value relationships above all, and to make Jesus known and loved in the everyday moments of College life.
Father's Day
We were most grateful to have a large gathering of fathers and fatherly figures for our Father’s Day celebration. We give thanks for the fathers and fatherly figures in our community who guide, protect, and nurture with love. As a Catholic community, we look to St Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, as a model of quiet strength, faithfulness, and care. His example reminds us that true fatherhood is not about power or recognition, but about presence, patience, and steadfast love. I am grateful to Graham Quade who presented a wonderful reflection on being a father. May all Fathers who take on this role in the lives of our students be blessed for the ways they inspire and support the next generation.
It is an exciting time in the life of our College as we welcome our new student leadership team for 2026. At our Week 8 assembly, the announcement was made that Gabriella Pereira and Max Reid have been elected as our new College Captains. We warmly congratulate them and all students who put themselves forward for leadership positions this year.
At Red Bend, student leadership is central to who we are as a community. Grounded in the Marist values of presence, humility, and family spirit, student leaders serve as role models for their peers while fostering unity and belonging. By empowering our leaders, we not only support their growth but also invest in the future, forming young people of faith, vision, and compassion who will carry these values into the wider world.
We now look forward to our Commissioning Ceremony on Wednesday 15 October at 9.15am in our Multipurpose Hall, when our 2026 leaders will be formally entrusted with their roles. This ceremony is always a highlight in our College calendar, marking both continuity and new beginnings as our leaders pledge themselves to the service of others.
Congratulations once again to Gabriella, Max, and our entire 2026 leadership team. We wish them every blessing as they prepare to guide our College into another year of growth, hope, and faith.
Tonight we will be celebrating the achievements of our 2025 HSC at our Graduation Dinner acknowledging the many contributions they have made to our College community. A dedicated Graduation Newsletter will be shared in the first week of the holidays, capturing the highlights of this memorable occasion.
May St Marcellin Champagnat and Mary our Good Mother continue to watch over our community.
Thank you to our families for their support of the College during Term 3. We have had another fantastic term that has seen the appointment of the 2026 Student Leaders and a wonderful farewell to our Year 12 students. As we conclude the term I have provided a few reminders for the start of term and an opportunity to receive some information about the changes regard the social media ban for under 16s.
I hope you all have a safe and relaxing break, we look forward to welcoming our students back in Term 4.

Gooloogong Bus drop off and pick up location
A letter will be sent out to families during the holidays detailing the change in the location for the College bus to pick up and drop off students who live in Gooloogong.
Currently, students are picked up and dropped off at Memorial Park, Lachlan Valley Way, Gooloogong, which is situated on a main road with frequent traffic. To improve student and family safety, the bus stop will be relocated to King Street, a quieter and safer location, that is undercover and safer for our students and families.
This change will take effect from the beginning of Term 4 2025 Tuesday 14 October.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our students.
Knock On Effect
On the first day back of Term 4, our Year 10 and 11 students will be attending a workshop delivered by NSW Government and Transport for NSW in partnership with NSW Rugby League. The workshop seeks to raise awareness of the impact of road trauma on families and the broader community. The Road Show will include a 25-30minute Presentation on Road Safety, this will be followed by a Q and A session where topics like Professionalism, Goal Setting and Respect will also be shared.
If you would like more information about this event, please contact your child's House Coordinator.

Study
Over the coming weeks, students are encouraged to keep working hard and prepare for each of their exams. A suggested study plan and some resources have been provided to all the students, which they can tailor to themselves to help them with organisation for the coming weeks. Teachers are also running study sessions in the school holidays and during the HSC exam period. Students have been emailed the schedule for these. Students are encouraged to attend and actively participate in these sessions. They are a great opportunity to ask any last minute questions and seek feedback. Finally, students are encouraged to complete as many past papers as possible and email to teachers for feedback. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email Mrs Deborah Wheeldon at dlt@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au.

Illness and Misadventure Program
The NESA Illness/Misadventure program assists HSC students who:
1. are prevented from attending an exam due to unforeseen situations such as illness or misadventure
2. consider that their performance in an exam has been affected by unforeseen situations such as illness or misadventure immediately before or during the exam.
Misadventure applications approved by NESA, will be awarded either their individual HSC examination mark or a mark derived from their school based assessment mark, whichever is higher.
NESA strongly recommends that students should attend their exams. It is important that you know that if for any reason an illness/misadventure application is unsuccessful and a student doesn’t attend an exam they will not receive an exam result and this may jeopardise their HSC. Please remember that NESA does not expect students to attend an exam against medical advice. If your child is in doubt about attending an exam please contact Mrs Trish Martin on 0417216930 or dc@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au
Post-school Transition
Mrs Kate Hogan will continue to be available to support students with post-school pathways and advice during Term 4 and after the release of ATARs in December. We wish all the Year 12 students the best with their exams.
The last few weeks of term have been a very busy ones. We have been preparing to farewell our Year 12 boarders, some of whom have been with us since Year 7. Year 12 leaves our boarding community with the very best of wishes.
They were farewelled with a dinner in the College Refectory, which was a night enjoyed by all year levels. Year 12 were also taken to dinner at the Forbes Inn by the College executive and Mr Dwyer - enjoying a special night out.
With the many “lasts” as Year 12 prepares for their HSC , comes the start of Year 11’s final year at RBCC. Year 11 final exams take them through to week 10.
It was pleasing to hear the leadership speeches in the Chapel from Beau McMahon, Ned Browne, Kailei Coe, Lucy Irvine and Sienna Blacker. All did a fantastic job in addressing the boarding community. Congratulations to the students selected, but thank you to all for nominating themselves.
Bush Walk to Ben Hall's Cave site and BBQ
On Sunday of week 8, the boarders set off to get a nature fix. Thanks to staff for assisting - it was great to see all get involved in cooking the BBQ, relaxing and enjoying some spring weather.
As we finish another busy term, I want to sincerely thank all staff and students for their efforts, teamwork, and spirit. Heading into the break, I encourage you to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy being with family and friends. Have a safe, happy holiday, and I look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for next term.
Wellbeing Week
In Week 8 we celebrated Wellbeing Week to coincide with RUOK day. Across the week we had various presenters come in and work with our students. A huge thanks to the team from Talk2MeBro who spent some time connecting with our Year 12 students. Our local school liaison officer, Jane Heffernan, spent time with our students in Years 7 - 11 helping them stay safe on and off line with very sound advice on internet and device safety.
On Thursday we celebrated RUOK Day led by Eliza Roylance, Zoe McRae and Matilda Martin. We celebrated with a BBQ, music and cake on the library lawn and our students shared messages and checked in with each other. During PC this week our students also worked on how to have conversation with our peers to check in on them and what they can do if they are not ok.
It was a great week and thank you to all involved in supporting this.
Year 12
We have spent the last week farewelling our Year 12 students. Their final days of classes were Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday saw House farewells with their peers sharing heartfelt messages and support as our Year 12 students edge closer to the next chapter in their lives.
The day also included games, trivia, some key information from Mrs Wheeldon, Mrs Hogan and Mrs Martin and culminated in the traditional sprinkling of water. Thursday we headed to Dubbo for some action sports. All students and staff involved had a fantastic day. With mass, assembly and graduation taking place today.
I would like to personally wish our Year 12 students all the best. A remarkable group of students who are a credit to themselves, families and the wider RBCC community. I look forward to hearing where you excel next.
Term 4
With the mid semester break upon us our students return to school in their summer uniforms. The holidays are a great chance to check uniforms and key learning equipment to be ready to start the new term.
A reminder regarding our students haircuts, uniform and jewellery requirements. These are made clear in the student handbook on page 17. We appreciate our families support in helping our students maintain our high standard of dress.
Have a fantastic break and I look forward to seeing everyone return safe and ready to learn in term 4.

Year 7 Local History Excursion
Year Seven participated in a local history excursion on Wednesday 10th September.
They had the opportunity to immerse themselves in history at the the following venues:
The Forbes Museum - a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers guided the students through layers of First Nations and colonial artefacts.
The Wiradjuri Dreaming Circle: Local elders taught the students cultural basket weaving and painting as well as the significance of signs and symbols at the centre.
The Forbes Visitor Information Centre: Resident historian, Rob Willis, played old soundtracks to explain local history.
Victoria Park: students discovered the history of the park and learnt about the different military campaigns that local soldiers have served in.
Forbes Court House: students were invited into the Court House to learn about the legal system.
Year Seven is appreciative of the time and effort made by our local historians to ensure that they had a great day.
Chess Team
Our Red Bend chess team travelled to Sydney to compete in the Secondary Schools One-Day Chess Tournament, which attracted a record 115 teams from 43 schools, including several country schools.
Knox Grammar School won the Open Division and with it the Terrey Shaw Shield, while James Ruse High School won the Junior Division (Years 7-9). Our Red Bend open side finished 46th, and will be much stronger for the experience next year, with our junior team finishing 63rd.
Both sides have gained a lot of confidence out of the experience. And are looking forward to returning next year to test our chess knowledge in 2026.
Great work Josh Morrison, Aidan Mctiernan, William Tandy, Seamus O'Malley, Hunter McMillian, Oliver Mead and Cooper Garrat.
Vinnies Group
We celebrated our 2025 Vinnies Youth Conference Commissioning Service. Thirty-five student members were inducted into the Society, and we also acknowledged our hardworking 2025 Senior Leadership team.
Over the last two terms, Vinnies members have worked tirelessly, running BBQ breakfasts and selling lollies on Fridays, to raise enough funds to buy 20 wearable blankets for distribution to those in need via the Forbes, Parkes and Condobolin SVDP Conferences.
We were thrilled to present these today to SVDP representatives; Rhonda Keane, Kelly Morgan, Kylie Biggs and Helen Smith.
Creative and Performing Arts
Term 3 has been a huge one for the CAPA department, with students participating in various shows, eisteddfods and exams in Art, Music, Dance and Drama. Many of our Visual Arts students entered the Forbes Show this term, in the categories of Fine Arts, Photography, Landscape and more, coming away with a host of First place awards. Thank you to art teachers Tracie Axton, Esmarie Boshoff and Georgia Barnes for their support of these students. Term 3 also saw the start of the Red Bend Choir. Students have enjoyed getting together and singing songs from Pitch Perfect, Coldplay and more.
A massive congratulations to our Year 12 students in Visual Arts and Music 1 for completing their major works and practical exams. We wish these students all the best as they undertake their written exams next term.
A reminder that we have vocal lessons and instrumental lessons for piano, violin, guitar, drums, clarinet and saxophone available at school. Please email Miss Cairney at creativearts@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au for more details.
Agriculture
Our Sheep and Cattle Teams competed at Eugowra Show on the weekend with some fabulous results and, as always, some wonderful community spirit and teamwork.
The Sheep Team was made up of 5 rams and 4 students; Kadence Kain, Olivia Bray, Oscar Townsend and Mack Pengilley. They were supported by Tom Lawler, who spent his day helping between the sheep and cattle team. By all accounts things went smoothly - the ribbon tally being a second and two thirds.
The Cattle Team started the day with the qualifying for Parading and Judging at the state finals at the Sydney Royal next year. Many people between the ages of 13 and 24 descend on Eugowra hoping to fill one of the 10 spots to go onto Sydney.
Alana Haynes, Emily van de Struik, Hugh Crothers and James Haynes were selected to represent our group in Sydney for parading. Alana also placed first in the Junior Judging final, which sees her off to Sydney to represent us in this state final.
In the Novice Junior Judging Peter Elias placed first, Dakota Bray came second and Jack Billing received a Highly Commended.
Following this the stud cattle judging took place with various ribbons.
Congrats again to Alana and Mrs Wynberg. Alana took out the Supreme Exhibit of the show with a heifer bred by Annika - now owned by Alana.
Marist Oratory Competition
Marist Oratory Competition 3rd September at St Joseph’s, Hunters Hill, Sydney
Six of our students, accompanied by Mrs. Anne Maree and Mr. Alex Denley, recently took part in the 33rd Marist Oratory Competition at St Joseph’s, Hunters Hill.
They joined students from 13 other Marist schools across NSW, sharing their voices and ideas in what was a truly inspiring day of public speaking. Our students spoke with confidence on a range of thought-provoking topics, including “Two sides to every story,” “The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing,” “The pot at the end of the rainbow,” and “The art of simplicity is a puzzle of complexity.”
A special mention goes to Chloe Pryor, who took on the challenge of the Impromptu section with great courage. With only five minutes to prepare, she delivered a thoughtful and engaging speech on “The silence between the notes.”
We are also thrilled to celebrate Year 7 student Peter Elias, who came first in his age group which is a wonderful achievement that reflects his talent and hard work.
Congratulations to Sophia Byrne, Georgia Baird, Katie Corke and Gabriella Pereira as well, for their dedication and effort. Each of our students represented the school with pride, and we are so pleased to celebrate their achievements as a community.
Culture Class
We hold a culture class every Thursday. Recently they have been learning Wiradjuri language, dance, and art. They've also made traditional headsets to wear when they dance, made from traditional bark and emu feathers.
The culture group is also creating their own art piece to hang in the school, along with learning how a bull roarer works, known as the very first telephone.
NSWCCC Athletics
Earlier in September, 13 of our students competed at the NSWCCC Athletics in Sydney as part of the Bathurst Diocese team. We were proudly represented by:

Lots of PBs all round and great team spirit — well done everyone!
Basketball
Students recently competed in the junior and intermediate Diocesan basketball gala day.
All students were great ambassadors of the college displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout the gala day.
Our Junior girls team 1 & 2 developed their skills throughout the day, improving each game. Our Year 7 team clinching the title as best RBCC team as they beat our Year 8 team when they played each other.
The junior boys team 1 & 2 both played well battling out tight games of basketball. Junior boys team 1 claimed the RBCC title beating team 2 in their game against each other.
Our intermediate girls and boys teams made up of just Year 9 students played impressively throughout their games. Whilst the teams didn’t secure a win, they didn’t stop competing.
15s Girls Rugby League
Our under 15s Girls Rugby League team travelled to Sydney for the CCC Cup. The team arrived at Penrith Monday afternoon, where we got to have a training session next to the Penrith Panthers Academy.
Upon our arrival, the girls were lucky enough to see the Panthers NRL squad in the carpark. Special mention to Panthers winger Brian To’o who beeped his horn and waved to the girls, and utility player Daine Laurie who shouted “Go Red Bend”. During their training session, the girls were also accompanied by ex-student Billy Phillips (made his NRL debut for the Panthers last week).
On Tuesday, the team travelled to Holy Cross College in Ryde for the CCC carnival.
Game 1 v St Patricks College, Campbelltown

Players of the day: Sarah Price and Isabelle Nicholson
The girls are to be commended for their overall performance on the day and the way they represented the College on and off the field.
Representative Hockey
The NSW Combined Catholic Colleges trials were held in Newcastle in Term 1. 8 students attended these trials and 3 players made the CCC teams which was an outstanding achievement. and from these, 3 RBCC students were selected-Archie Daley, Jagger Gillingham, Sam Westcott for the NSWCCC team. These students went on to play the NSW Combined High School and the NSW Independent Schools sides.
The boys covered the back through Archie and Jagger with Archie positioned in the midfield. This enabled them to play a cohesive unit which were able to defeat the CHS side, the first time for several years. The team finished second to the IAS schools. Archie Daley and Sam Westcott were then selected in the Allschools Merit team unfortunately with no tour this year.
Jett Johnstone
Jett was selected in a team to play hockey in the European Easter tour to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Belgium and missed the CCC selection trials. In this tournament, Jett played as a striker against Scotland, England, Belgium, Ireland and Germany. He played Belgium first and was defeated by a more skillful team. He then played Ireland and Scotland and won both these games. This placed the team into bronze medal contention against England but was beaten by one goal in a very close match. Jett had a very successful and enjoyable experience over the two weeks, gaining great experience and playing against strong world European teams. Congratulations Jett!
Best wishes to Jett for his HSC and hockey career as he moves to Goal College, based at Sydney Olympic Park to finish his HSC year.
Thank you also to Glenn Johnstone for his assistance and ongoing support of hockey at RBCC, helping to develop players skills and confidence, enabling the College to obtain remarkable success at state level.
Squash
On Friday 12th September, fourteen students represented Red Bend Catholic College at the Donna Lane Shield held at the Parkes Squash Courts. The competition included strong players from Parkes, Cowra, Canowindra, Dubbo, Rylstone, Kandos and Dunedoo, with many matches going down to the wire. For the first time, Red Bend proudly came away as overall champion school. In the teams event, Laila Kelly, teamed with Chelsea Gallagher from Dunedoo, achieved an outstanding result by winning the Girls Team Champion title.
Every Red Bend student secured at least a win in either the teams or individual events and a special mention to Claire Bayley who made it to the semi finals for the Girls individuals a fantastic achievement. Congratulations to Claire Bayley, Jack Dunford, Lenny Iyer, Heidi Jones, Cooper Kelly, Laila Kelly, Fletcher Matthews, Frank McMahon, Ashton McQuie, Daisy Rice, Alfie Rosser, Lillah Smith, Jacob Swindle and Noah Webb for their outstanding behaviour, sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the day.
