Inspiring Minds, Hearts and Spirits
MR STEPHEN DWYER | Term 2, Week 6
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of our College community,
Celebrating the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat
June 6 is the celebration of the Feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers and the inspiration behind the mission and values that continue to shape life at Red Bend Catholic College today.
St Marcellin was a man of deep faith, compassion, and courage. He believed that to truly educate a child, we must first love them not just through our words, but through our actions, our presence, and our commitment to their wellbeing and growth. He recognised the face of Christ in every young person, especially those most in need of support and encouragement.
At Red Bend, the Marist spirit is woven into the fabric of daily life, in our relationships, in the way we teach, and in the way we care for one another. Whether in the classroom, the boarding house, the playground, or the office, our staff walk alongside your students with patience, hope, and a deep belief in their potential.
The values of faith, simplicity, presence, family spirit, love of work, and following Mary’s example are not just ideals, they are lived each day by those who serve this community. These values guide how we welcome, nurture, and support each student on their journey.
As we celebrate this special feast day, we give thanks for the gift of the Marist charism and the strong sense of community it creates at Red Bend. We are grateful for the partnership we share with you, our families, as together we help young people grow into capable, compassionate, and faith-filled individuals.
We warmly invite you to join us for our whole school celebration at our Champagnat Mass and Awards Presentation on Friday 13 June at 11.30am in our Multipurpose Hall.
Developing a whole-school Wellbeing Framework
As part of our 2025 Annual Improvement Plan, we are committed to strengthening and enhancing wellbeing across our school community. A key initiative underway this year is the development of a whole-school Wellbeing Framework designed to support students, staff, and families in a way that reflects our Catholic Marist identity and the needs of our community.
We know that student wellbeing is deeply connected to learning success, positive relationships, and a strong sense of belonging. This framework aims to build on the existing strong foundations, drawing on current research and evidence-based practices to inform future directions. Our aim is to ensure that every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to flourish spiritually, socially, emotionally, and academically.
We have partnered with the Association of Independent Schools and fourteen other schools over an eighteen-month period in an initiative focused on strengthening approaches to student wellbeing.
At the heart of this work is our belief that wellbeing is everyone’s responsibility and that, guided by our Marist values of presence, family spirit, simplicity, love of work and in Mary's way, we can nurture a community where every individual is known, valued, and supported to thrive.
We look forward to sharing more about the Wellbeing Framework as it develops and thank you for your continued partnership in supporting the holistic growth of every student at Red Bend.
Debutante Ball
On Saturday May 17, we gathered in Parkes for the annual Red Bend Catholic College Debutante Ball. It was a truly memorable evening that celebrated grace and tradition with a group of our wonderful year 11 students. Congratulations to our debutantes and their partners for representing the College with such poise and elegance. It was a celebration of both tradition and growth, and a night that will be long remembered by all who attended.
The evening was a great success thanks to the dedication and hard work of our staff. A special thank you to Ms Tristin Nicholls for her outstanding coordination of the event. Her calm leadership and attention to detail ensured everything ran smoothly. We also extend our thanks to Miss Emily Allegri for choreographing the elegant Debutante dance and preparing the students with such care and enthusiasm. Thanks also to Mrs Therese Glasheen, who served as our MC for the evening, guiding the formalities with warmth and professionalism.
May St Marcellin Champagnat and Mary our Good Mother continue to watch over our community.
Stephen Dwyer, Principal
I hope all staff, students and families have a restful exeat. I look forward to welcoming our students back to school following the long weekend. This is an important time for our boarders to connect with their families and return to finish the term in a positive way.
Uniform Committee
The Red Bend uniform is an important part of our College community and student identity. To support our students and in response to feedback from the community, the College is seeking interested parents to be part of a Uniform Committee. The purpose of the committee is to recommend an inclusive uniform option that aligns with the existing Red Bend Catholic College uniform and is practical for all students. This committee is not about changing the College uniform, it is about adding an additional inclusive option. Those parents who are interested are asked to email me at simonmartino@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au
Arriving Late or Leaving Early
It is important for families to communicate with the College if their child is arriving late or departing early. This means either emailing SSO with the reason for your child’s late arrival or early departure or coming into Reception and signing your child in or out with the staff in the front office. Thank you for your assistance in following this process.
The Red Bend Way
Being Active and Empowered Learners
Our students in Years 7 -10 have recently returned from their exams and this is an important time for them to review their goals and make appropriate changes to improve. An important part of this is for students to be accountable for their learning. I encourage all parents and families to continue to encourage their child/ren to arrive at school ready to learn and committed to being their best in all areas of the College.
Together our partnership can help to Inspire Minds, Hearts and Spirits of our students who take pride in their education and their future.
Being An Active and Empowered Learner – Encourages students to be motivated, resilient and to set goals as they strive for excellence.
Bus Expectations
College expectations apply to students at all times when they are in College uniform. Particularly when catching the school bus students are reminded to ensure their behaviour meets College and public expectations. The following reminders were shared with students who catch our College buses to Cowra and Grenfell, however these expectations apply to all students who catch buses to and from the College. If student behaviour does not meet expectations, it can result in further consequences either from the Bus company or the College. Thank you to our families for ensuring their child/ren meet our expectations.
Year 9 Parents and Carers | Electives 2026
Students in Year 9 attended an information session this week about their courses for 2026. The following topics were covered:
Record of School Achievement (RoSA)
Electives
Mandatory courses
Process for selecting electives
Resources
The session also covered academic pathways from Stage 5 to Stage 6. An emphasis was made on the importance of aiming for high academic grades, especially if considering studying Advanced English, Advanced Mathematics and or Chemistry or Physics in Stage 6. The purpose for outlining with the students, this information is to start to build an understanding of the academic rigour of Stage 6 courses. It is hoped that by providing students with explicit information on academic indicators of success that it will foster and strengthen the Year 9 students’ motivation and engagement with their learning.
Students were encouraged to select electives based on their strengths and interests, to make the most of their educational opportunities and to work to the best of their ability.
A new elective, Work Education, is being offered to students in Year 10 for 2026. Work Education provides opportunities for community and work-based learning, enabling students to explore possible future work options and career pathways. Work Education is for those students seeking an employment pathway at the conclusion of Year 10 or during Year 11.
Students have received an email, with instructions on how to submit their elective preferences for 2026. Parents and carers are asked to approve their child’s elective choices on the web preference platform. The Year 9 students have been asked to submit their elective preferences by Friday 13 June.
Please don’t hesitate to contact Trish Martin, dc@redbendcc.nsw.edu if you have any questions about your child’s electives for 2026.
Year 11 Half Yearly Reports
The Half Yearly reports for Year 11 should be finalised in Week 7. Parents and carers will receive an email with their child’s report attached. If parents have any questions about the report, please don’t hesitate to contact Trish Martin, dc@redbendcc.edu.au
ICAS Tests
Within our school community there are students who shine brightly, displaying exemplary dedication and academic talent. They deserve to be recognised and this year we are giving them the opportunity to showcase and celebrate their talents in the world-renowned ICAS competition.
What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, and Digital Technologies.
ICAS results are in-depth and meaningful, and ICAS evaluates student performance against other competition entrants across the state and nation. The data reveals student strengths and weaknesses and can help you recognise and support your child's academic journey.

House Liturgies
One aspect of the prayer and spiritual life of our College community are our House Liturgies, held in the chapel of Mary Our Good Mother. Each of our eight house groups gathers once per term with their student and staff House leaders. We give thanks for the blessings of our lives and reflect on the wisdom of Christian scriptures, themes of the liturgical season or the Marist theme for the year - Pilgrims of Hope.
Our 2025 Liturgy Captains have been especially creative and attentive to their duties in this area - making each House liturgy a grace-filled beginning to the day for their houses.
Marist Solidarity Australia
Our newly appointed MSA Ambassadors Ethan Ray and Max Reid spoke at assembly recently about the valuable work undertaken by MSA - and to promote the Fundraising BBQs in weeks 3 and 6. Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) is the international agency for the aid and development work of the Marist family in Australia throughout Asia and the Pacific Islands.
The focus of MSA school campaigns in 2025 is St Joseph’s College in Tenaru, Solomon Islands. Their modest school infrastructure is nearly 80 years old and struggling with a large student population and overcrowding, the facilities at St Joseph’s are in need of renovations and refurbishments.
All families are invited to contribute to this worthy cause via the link: https://www.australianmaristsolidarity.org/donate
Pilgrimage to the Australian Catholic Youth Festival
ACYF (Australian Catholic Youth Festival) is a three-day festival bringing together thousands of young people from all across Australia. The Festival will include opportunities for engagement with other young people, school and youth groups, Bishops, musicians and speakers. Each day will include the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities including prayer, Mass, workshops, talks, live concerts, games, justice issues and an interactive expo.
Red Bend Catholic College students from Year 9-12 are invited to submit an Expression of Interest in ACYF. If there is sufficient interest, we would take an RBCC Bus to Melbourne leaving early Sunday 30 November. We would depart Melbourne early on Wednesday 3 December.
Bishop Columba is very supportive of this experience - and may be able to join our group as a fellow pilgrim.
We will endeavour to keep costs as low as possible, but we anticipate a cost per student in excess of $500.
Students in Year 12 are welcome to submit an Expression of Interest in ACYF form. Parents and Year 12s should be mindful that this event occurs after the conclusion of the HSC Exams. These participants would not be school students but rather young adults representing the diocese.
Parents and students can learn more about the ACYF from the videos linked below:
This past fortnight has been filled with study, exams, netball (both here and interstate), cattle team showing, equestrian events, rugby league and rugby union games, and more. This time of year is always busy, with the EXEAT weekend coming at a good time for boarders to have the opportunity to get home for a few days.
Our students have shown responsibility in maintaining clean and organised rooms and common areas, and have enjoyed events such as the State of Origin. Also, the Senior Boys hosted the other dormitories for a BBQ on the Friday just gone. The idea of getting boarders to work with each other to prepare / cook and enjoy a BBQ all together was a popular one. Well done to the vast majority of our students that help build up the community and create an environment where we can all learn and grow.
Thank you to the boarding staff that continue to work diligently with our boarders to ensure they get the guidance and care they need. The weekly vouchers to the canteen were again awarded for those Boarders making a positive contribution to the boarding community.
Recently, Enrolments Officer Tiffany Nicholls and I had the opportunity to represent the College at the Boarding Schools Expo in Dubbo. This was a fantastic opportunity for me personally to bounce ideas off other schools and get a feel for what other schools are doing in their residences. It was great to see many ex-students and hear about their journeys. There was lots of interest and an opportunity to meet many potential families.
Vinnies group
Thank you to all that supported our Vinnies Easter Raffle last term. On Tuesday, four of our senior Vinnies leaders had the privilege of presenting a cheque for $1000 to Helen Smith, President of the Forbes SVDP Conference and Kelly Morgan, SVDP Regional Director, Wilcannia-Forbes.
This contribution from our school conference contributes to the amazing work performed by St Vincent de Paul in our diocese, region and local area. Cost of living pressure and the housing crisis continue to create a strong need for SVDP support and we are proud of our students for getting involved and making a contribution on the school's behalf.
The RBCC Vinnies kids are a great example of family spirit and doing good quietly in the Marist Way.
Sorry Day
We were fortunate to be joined by Aunty Florence Onus for our Sorry Day assembly this morning.
Florence is a Birrigubba, Bidjara and Jagalingu woman from North and Central Queensland and is a survivor of the Stolen Generation.
Florence spoke about our shared Australian history and her personal family story, and we thank her for her insight and the empathy she invoked in us all.

CWA Public Speaking
Students represented the College at the CWA Public Speaking competition in Parkes yesterday, speaking on a wide variety of topics that included 'Bitten by the Bug', 'Why Leadership is Important' and 'The Voice of Reason has Laryngitis'.
All students spoke exceptionally well and we have five students through to the next round to be held in Orange.
Congratulations to Peter Elias and Sophia Byrne who both received Highly Commended in the 7/8 section. Catalina Elias placed 1st in the 9/10 section with Coco Byrnes and Georgia Baird receiving Highly Commended.
2025 Lit Quiz Team
Earlier this term, eight enthusiastic Year 7 readers made their way to James Sheahan Catholic High to compete in the Central West Heat of the 2025 Lit Quiz Competition.
Students competed in two teams of four answering 100 themed questions over 10 rounds. Questions are based on all literature types, including popular fiction and non-fiction books, fables, myths and rhymes.
A wide range of Central West schools competed in the heat with over 30 teams entered. Both RBCC teams did a fantastic job with the team consisting of Elena Bet, Brodie Stephenson, Miah Ross and Jacob Swindle placing in overall third place. This team also won the “Roald Dahl” round with their extensive knowledge of all Dahl’s books earning them individual book prizes.
Our second team consisting of Lexi Millerd, Tamryn Meyer, Marcus Collins and Lucy James also performed strongly placing sixth overall and winning individual book prizes for their outstanding performance in the “Marine Animals in Literature” round.
All students were outstanding ambassadors for RBCC and a lot of fun was had as we engaged in the “Sport of Reading”.

News from Loyola House
There is something special about House Carnivals at Red Bend... the colours, the competition and the contagious school spirit to name a few! This year, the Loyola Lions brought it all and in full force. From the cheer squads on the sideline, to chasing those final steps over the finish line, the Loyola Lions showed exactly what it means to lead with heart, humour and hustle.
The highlight of the day? Without a doubt, our Year 12s, who brought IT with their creative skit, complete with perfectly in-sync pedal-pumping, and plenty of laughs. Their leadership and energy set the tone for the whole day, reminding us all that school spirit is about more than competition.
Ms Maitland, stationed at the running events marshalling area, couldn’t help but notice the sea of yellow tearing down the track, often placing in the top four. A special shoutout goes to our junior 7 & 8 relay team, who didn’t just compete- they won! If this is what Loyola looks like now, imagine the roar in 2030 when these athletes are leading the way in Year 12.
Loyola House Captain Stella Neville: Earlier in the term, Loyola had a fantastic day across all cohorts at the school athletics carnival. It was an awesome day filled with loads of fun and participation, all students in Loyola should be proud of their efforts. I’d like to give a special mention particularly to the 2025 Loyola Year 12’s. Their enthusiasm and cooperation leading up to and on the day does not go unrecognised. Jagger and I deeply appreciate all the time given up to practice skits and help organise costumes. We are very thankful and proud of our peers!
🏆 Loyola Legends:
Over the school holidays, Loyola student Toby Morgan represented New South Wales at the Australian Little Athletics Championships held in Adelaide and he returned home with a swag of medals, unforgettable memories, and well-deserved recognition.
Toby’s journey began with a training camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation, where he spent two days building team spirit and preparing alongside the NSW squad. From there, the team travelled to Adelaide, where they competed across two days against the best young athletes in the country.
Toby delivered an exceptional performance, earning:
🥇 Gold in Javelin
🥇 Gold in 400m
🥈 Silver in 100m
🥈 Silver in 200m
🥈 Silver in 800m
His efforts not only earned him personal accolades, but also contributed to NSW taking out the overall Championship trophy. Toby was even recognised in the NSW Little Athletics official article for his outstanding contributions to the team’s success.
As we look ahead to the conclusion of semester one, the spirit of Loyola continues to grow, built on participation, pride, and the passion of students like our House Captains, and every single Lion who showed up and gave their best.
Whether it’s on the track, in a skit, or in the classroom, Loyola is a community that leads with heart. As Marists, we are called to strive for excellence with humility, presence, and love of work. Let’s take that same energy into the final weeks of Semester One, giving our best in class, in our assessments and exams and supporting one another every step of the way. Go Loyola! 🦁💛
Agriculture | Cattle Team at Dubbo Show
Our Cattle Team had a fantastic time over the three days of the 2025 Dubbo Show.
𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟏 was parade judging - judging the students and how well they handle their animals. With 140 students competing, we were thrilled to have Kourosh Bavafa, Finn Brown, Summer Baker and Alana Hayes all in finals, with Alana awarded Champion.
Next was Junior Judging - testing the ability of the students to judge the animals, which saw Alana and Kourosh both in the finals with each receiving 5th place in their age group.
𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟐 was the animal judging and we had a marvellous day with many ribbons and, most excitingly, we were awarded Most Successful Limousin Exhibitor and the same for the Bos Indicus breed (Santa Gertrudis).
Perhaps the most exciting news of the day was the presentation to Mrs Wynberg and Mrs Earl who competed in the “Golden Oldies” parading class with our cow and calf and scored Runners Up!
𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝟑 was the heifer show, with Mrs Wynberg’s Angus heifers both receiving 3rd place. We were also announced as the Best Maintained school team.
Another successful and happy event ticked for the year.

Would you like to be a part of our Year 10 Careers Week? We're looking for members of the community to help our students build their employability skills and to encourage the career exploration process.
Careers Talks | We are grouping the talks loosely by skill base, rather than industry, to allow opportunity for career options to be presented to students that they may not have thought about, but their skills and interests may align with. The talks are casual, and are structured like a panel that allows various people to introduce themselves, share their career story and career opportunities in their industry and the students can then ask questions.
Topics include...
Building
Thinking
Creating
Helping
Persuading
Organising
Mock Interviews | Students will attend a brief (5 min) interview. The questions will be general in nature, as the aim is to build confidence in an interview situation. We are seeking panel members for these interviews.
