Inspiring Minds, Hearts and Spirits
MR STEPHEN DWYER | Term 2, Week 10
Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of our College community,
As we come to the end of Term 2, it is a fitting time to reflect on the richness of learning and the vibrant spirit that continues to shape life at Red Bend Catholic College.
This term has been marked by a wide range of engaging learning experiences across all year levels. In classrooms, students have deepened their knowledge, refined their skills, and responded to challenges that have come their way. Beyond the classroom, a diverse range of faith-based and co-curricular activities, sporting events, and excursions have provided students with opportunities to grow.
Throughout these experiences, our students have demonstrated resilience, determination, and a willingness to step beyond their comfort zones—living out our College motto, Per Angusta ad Augusta, ‘Through Difficulties to Greatness’. Whether working hard through a complex learning task, persisting through a higher-order thinking skills assessment, striving in a creative arts pursuit, or embracing new and challenging experiences, our students continually demonstrate that growth often comes through perseverance.
I am extremely grateful to our dedicated staff who make these opportunities possible, and to our families who support the many dimensions of student life at the College.
We look forward to continuing this momentum into Term 3 as we work together to inspire the minds, hearts and spirits of those in our care.
Living the Marist Way with Hope in Our College Community
On June 13, we celebrated as a whole school community the feast of St Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, whose vision and values continue to shape the mission and daily life of Red Bend Catholic College.
This year, our Marist theme, Pilgrims of Hope, calls us to walk together with courage and optimism, even in times of uncertainty or difficulty. It reminds us that, like St Marcellin and Mary, we are called to be signs of hope in the lives of others, especially those most in need.
Our sincere thanks to Bishop Columba, Fr Arthur and Fr Harry who celebrated a beautiful Mass with our whole school community on Champagnat Day. Following the Mass, Champagnat Awards were presented to students who, by their words and deeds, live out the values of our Catholic Marist community. Our congratulations to the students and staff member Mrs Carmel Turner who received these awards and medals. In the afternoon, the students participated in various activities and came together to spell out the word "Hope". It was truly a memorable day for all. Pictures of the recipients of the Champagnat Awards can be found in this newsletter.
2025 Timor-Leste Partnership Program
Mrs Karen Umbers, our Diverse Learning Coordinator, is currently participating in the 2025 Timor-Leste Partnership Program from Friday, 27 June, to Saturday, 12 July 2025.
This program involves volunteers from Australian Marist schools working closely with the staff at the Catholic Institute for the Formation of Teachers (also known as ICFP) in Baucau, Timor-Leste, to support teaching and office staff with learning the English language. The program involves an initial in-country experience, followed by an online support program for six months. We wish Mrs Umbers all the very best.
Connecting with Our Boarding Families
At Red Bend, we deeply value the strong relationships we share with our families, especially those who entrust their children to our care as boarders. As part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing these connections, members of our staff have recently undertaken a series of community visits to spend time with current and prospective families in regional and remote areas.
In recent weeks, visits have taken place in:
Week 5 – Warren, Bourke, Brewarrina, Walgett, and Lightning Ridge
Week 8 – Wilcannia, Cobar, Nyngan, and Narromine
Week 9 – Lake Cargelligo and Condobolin
It has been a privilege to meet with families, listen to their stories, and share in the hopes they have for their children. We are truly grateful for the warmth and hospitality shown to us, and for the many affirmations of the care and dedication our staff provide for their children.
We continue to experience strong interest in boarding from Catholic primary schools and regional schools, reflecting the trust placed in our College community.
My sincere thanks to Ms Tiff Nicholls for her thoughtful coordination of these visits, and to Mr Chris Douglass our Director of Boarding, Mrs Danielle Scott our Year 7 Advisor, Mr Barry Merritt our Aboriginal Education Coordinator for their participation in these visits.
May St Marcellin Champagnat and Mary our Good Mother continue to watch over our community.
Stephen Dwyer, Principal
As Term 2 draws to a close, I extend my heartfelt thanks to our students, staff, and families for their ongoing partnership and support. This term has been filled with rich learning experiences, spiritual growth, and family spirit that reflect our Red Bend way to Inspire Minds, Hearts and Spirits. From academic achievements to co-curricular successes, our students have shown a commitment to learning and continuous improvement. As we enter the holidays, I encourage everyone to take time to rest, reflect, and recharge. I look forward to welcoming our students back in Term 3, ready to embrace new opportunities and challenges together.
Late Arrivals and Early Departures - Important Reminder
It is important for families to notify the College if their child will be arriving late or leaving early. Please do this by either:
Emailing or calling the Student Services Office (SSO) with the reason for your child’s late arrival or early departure, or
Coming into Reception to sign your child in or out with the front office staff.
Additionally, all students arriving late or leaving early must be signed out using the iPads at the front office by their parents/carer.
SSO contact details 02 6851 1558 or absent@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au
Student Details - Important Reminder for Parents/Carers
The College is required to maintain accurate and up-to-date contact information for all students. This includes general contact details as well as any relevant medical information, plans or changes in circumstances.
It is essential that Parents/Carers notify the College promptly of any changes to their child/ren’s personal, medical, or contact information. Keeping this information current is vital to ensuring the wellbeing and safety of all students.
If your child/ren details have changed please contact the College on 02 6852 2000 or rbcc@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au
Attendance
I would like to thank our families for an improved response to student attendance. As we conclude Term 2, our attendance has improved significantly across the life of the College. I wish to take this opportunity as we conclude Term 2, to remind you of the change to our attendance monitoring and encourage you to consider how you support your child/ren in attending school every day. Remember to reach out to your child's House Coordinator if you wish to discuss your child/ren’s attendance further.
Student Attendance and Eligibility for College Representation & Leadership
Students representing the College are required to maintain a minimum attendance rate of 90% from the time of selection through to the event date and expected to attend compulsory College days and events. Failure to meet the 90% attendance requirement and/or failure to attend the College events may limit a student’s opportunity to represent the College.
Supporting Student Attendance and Wellbeing
How You Can Help
Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting regular school attendance. Here are some ways you can help your child:
Plan holidays and family events during non-school days.
Schedule appointments outside of school hours whenever possible.
Ensure your child attends school every day unless they are genuinely unwell.
Establish a consistent morning routine, including healthy sleep habits, to prepare for the school day.
How We Support Your Child
At the College, we are committed to supporting your child’s attendance, wellbeing, and academic success:
Teachers take a genuine interest in your child’s wellbeing and are dedicated to supporting their learning through appropriate challenge and care.
Teachers also help your child build positive relationships with peers to support social and emotional growth.
House Coordinators monitor student attendance and wellbeing, offering ongoing support where needed.
College Counsellors are available to provide triage and referrals for students experiencing mental health challenges.
We appreciate your support in maintaining high expectations for student participation and College representation.
Cashless Canteen
Please be advised that since the commencement of 2025 the College has been cash free. This includes the Canteen. To support the transition, the Canteen staff have been allowing some cash purchases. Please note as of Term 3, cash will no longer be accepted.
As outlined in the welcome letter sent to parents and carers on 3 February 2025 (see attached), all canteen purchases will need to be made using electronic payment methods.
If you haven’t already, you can register for Flexischools—instructions are available on our College website. Students may also use EFTPOS cards to make purchases directly at the canteen.
Please ensure your child/ren are set up and ready to access the canteen from the start of Term 3.
Year 7 to 10 Semester One Reports
Parents and Carers of Year 7 to 10 students will receive via email their child/ren semester one report. This report provides explicit feedback to parents on their child’s commitment to learning, academic progress and involvement in pastoral care. The report also includes recommendations on areas that students can work on to improve their knowledge and skills.
If you have any questions about your child’s report please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Trish Martin E: dc@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au.
Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences
Years 7-12 Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be held on Wednesday 30 July in the Multi-Purpose Hall from 3.45pm - 7.00pm. Each interview will be limited to 5 minutes.
To make an appointment, please access our booking portal via the college website www.redbendcc.nsw.edu.au under the Parent Resources tab or via the School Stream app. The Parent/Teacher link will be available from Wednesday 3 July until Tuesday 29 July.
If you are unable to access the internet to make bookings, please contact the ICT department at the College on 68522000 or email it-support@redbendcc.nsw.edu.au who will facilitate the procedure for you.
It is advised that you prioritise the teachers that you would like to speak with. This is especially recommended to parents whose availability is limited and or they have more than one child enrolled. If you are unable to book an interview in the timeframe you require, please use the option at the bottom of the booking site to ‘Request another time’.
Where possible, it is recommended that your child accompanies you to the conferences.
We look forward to meeting with you on the night and value your support of Red Bend Catholic College.

The Trial exams assess the students' knowledge and skills in each of their Year 12 Board Developed Courses. The majority of the courses are weighted at 30% of the total school based assessment mark. It is a very important time for Year 12. These exams, by virtue of their title, provide a trial run for the HSC. If the students have studied well they will reap the award of rewarding results.
Please find a link to the exam timetable
The College has great confidence in our Year 12 students and their capacity to work hard in preparing for the Trial exams. The students are strongly encouraged to make good use of their term 2 school holidays, to have an organised study schedule and to dedicate consistent and worthwhile study time to revising course content and completing past HSC style exam papers.
Below is the schedule of additional study sessions that teachers are offering throughout the holidays and into the first 2 weeks of term 3. All students are encouraged to attend as many of these as possible in preparation for the Trial exams.
Some ideas to help students study effectively:
Creating summary notes using the syllabus
Answering questions from past papers
Making audio notes
Using colour/visuals
Creating acronyms to help you remember concepts
Using Edrolo/Atomi - video, practice questions, study notes
Redo past questions

Encourage your child to eat well, to exercise and talk to them about the importance of a good sleep. Take an interest in their exam timetable and ask them how they did after each exam. If for some reason, an exam does not go as planned, encourage your child to put it behind them and to focus on what is coming up.

We wish all Year 12 students the best for their Trial exams.
Year 9 and 10 Game Changers Retreat Day
Students involved in the Game Changers program in Years 9 and 10 joined with their peers from Marist College Canberra for their annual retreat day. Game Changers is a comprehensive Catholic Youth Ministry Program for students attending a Marist school.
The day included sessions exploring Jesus as our ‘True North’ and Mary, being the ‘needle’ of the compass. Students were challenged to reflect on their life and on ‘social justice’ issues. Through a game, students looked at the ethical price of the clothes and compared which companies are more ethical than others.
In our concluding Liturgy, many of the students expressed thanks for the blessings given to them for the opportunity to meet as a Game Changers group.
Students interested in becoming involved in Game Changers activities at Red Bend can see Mr Eyles, Director of Mission - or the mentors for each Year level: Mr Carmo (Year 7) Mrs Nunn (Year 8) Ms Nowlan (Year 9) and Mrs Cowling (Year 10).
As Term 2 comes to a close, we take time to reflect on life in the Boarding School. This term has had many positives as well as some challenges. I look forward to a positive start to term 3 as we continue to grow as a Boarding community.
We thank our staff for their patience and guidance, and our families for their ongoing support. As we head into a well-earned break, we encourage all boarding students to reflect, recharge, and return next term ready to build on the progress they’ve made. A reminder that we return from 2pm on Monday 21 July.
I'm also happy to welcome some new staff into the Boarding Team. I have asked them to provide a few lines about themselves as an introduction.

Bronze Medal in VETiS Primary Industries at the National WorldSkills Championships
We are incredibly proud to announce that Year 12 student, Charlie Spry, has been awarded the Bronze Medal in VETiS Primary Industries at the National WorldSkills Championships, held last week in Brisbane.
Charlie went head-to-head with top students from across Australia, showcasing outstanding talent and technical ability in a series of challenging competitions. His performance highlights the depth of knowledge and practical skills required to excel in the Primary Industries qualification.
At Red Bend, we’re committed to nurturing real-world skills in our students—and Charlie’s achievement is a testament to that.
Year 9 History Excursion to Cowra
Year 9 recently travelled to Cowra as part of their studies of Australia’s involvement in World War II.
Students had the opportunity to learn about an important part of our local history, the Cowra Breakout. The Breakout at the Cowra Prisoner of War (POW) camp took place on the 5th of August 1944 when Japanese POWs attempted to escape, resulting in the death of 234 Japanese POWs.
Year 9 were placed on four different buses to visit different locations around Cowra. At the Cowra POW Camp, students were able to view the remains of the camp and learn about life as a POW. The recorded talk at the replica Watchtower was very informative and engaging.
Students visited the Cowra War Cemetery which is the resting place of Japanese and Australian soldiers who died during the Cowra Breakout. At the Peace Bell students learnt that this Peace Bell is the only Peace Bell outside of Japan.
We are very fortunate to have such wonderful history resources so close to us. Year 9 students were highly engaged, respectful and a pleasure to take on this excursion.

Our Red Bend Chess Team played Parkes Christian School in round 3 of the competitions, and sadly we were defeated by one game.

Joshua Morrison: ranked no. 2 - Our Chess Team Captain won his match quite convincingly, putting RBCC back in the race.
James Kelly: ranked no. 3 - James put up a close game, but was ultimately defeated.
Seamus O'Malley: ranked no. 4 - Seamus was asked to step up into the top 4 position, and step up he did, winning victory in a difficult match.
Well done to the whole Chess Team for 2025.
