The state of Pennsylvania requires that all children have a dental exam upon entry to school, and in 3rd and 7th grade.  Parents are encouraged to have their child examined twice a year by their family dentist and have the dentist complete the state Private Dental Exam form.  This form should be brought to the school nurse so it can be added to your students health record.  If your child does not have a completed dental exam on file in their student health record, a school dental evaluation will be provided for free by one of the school dental hygienists.

The Reading School District Dental Department includes two Certified School Dental Hygienists that rotate throughout the district during the year to provide the state mandated school dental evaluations.   As part of the Health Services Department, the school dental hygienists also provide dental health lessons in the classroom to reinforce good oral health habits for all students.

School dental evaluations are much different than a dentist office visit because we are visually inspecting their teeth and mouth for anything out of the ordinary.  Regular dental exams, dental cleanings, xrays, fluoride, and dental work are all done at a dentist office, not at school.

School dental hygienists follow all CDC Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control while performing dental evaluations to protect the health and safety of all students and their families, which is also in accordance with the Reading School District Health and Safety Plan.
