A step-by-step guide to brushing correctly:
Place toothbrush at a 45 degree angle against your gum line and move the brush in a circular motion around the teeth and gums
Brush the outside of your teeth using the same angle and circular motion
Brush the inside of your teeth using the same angle and circular motion as the outside
Brush the tops of the teeth
Brush the back sides of the upper front teeth
Brush the back sides of the lower front teeth
Brush your tongue
Remember to brush for 2 minutes twice a day.
Children age 9 and under need an adult to help them with brushing and flossing until the child can tie their own shoes and write their name in cursive.
A step-by-step guide to flossing correctly:
Take 18" of floss and wrap most of it around the middle finger of one hand. Wrap a little floss on the middle finger of the other hand (this keeps all the clean floss on one hand and the dirty floss on the other)
Use your thumbs and/or index fingers to guide the floss between your teeth (holding no more than one inch of floss between your fingers)
Gently slide the floss between your teeth (making a "C" shape)
Gently slide the floss under the gums while making the "C" shape and rub the tooth surfaces to remove food and germs
Always floss behind the last tooth on both the top and bottom of each side
*It's important to remember that your gums are shaped like a triangle so the floss has to slide down each side of that triangle to clean the teeth and gums properly.
What is a cavity? A cavity is a hole in the tooth. When plaque and acid lay on your teeth from things we eat and drink and if proper homecare is not done, then that is when a cavity can occur.
Have you ever noticed your gums bleeding? Then most likely you have gingivitis. Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum tissue. If you don't brushing and floss then plaque will lay at the gum line and cause the gums to get irritated. When the gums get irritated that is when they get red and swollen.
Xylitol is a type of carbohydrate that looks like sugar but has almost half the calories and is sweeter than sugar.
Xylitol is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables like strawberries, mushrooms, cauliflower, and raspberries.
Xylitol is extracted from birch bark and corn cobs and used as a sweetener in place of sugar.
Xylitol is a common ingredient in sugar-free chewing gum.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) approved the use of Xylitol as a sugar substitute because it's known to block the growth of bacteria in the mouth and Xylitol is digested much slower than sugar which is beneficial for diabetics.
**Xylitol is NOT SAFE for Dogs. More companies are using Xylitol in their products (like peanut butter) for diabetics, so it's important to keep any products containing Xylitol away from your dogs.**
