The Vermont Marble Company
By Scott and Colby
The Vermont Marble Company was originally called the Sutherland Falls Marble Company and was founded in 1870 by Redfield Proctor Sr. In 1880 Redfield Proctor Sr. organized and became the president of the Vermont Marble Company which included Rutland Marble Company and the Sutherland Falls Marble Company.
It was made for shaping marble. Immigrants from 29 different countries came to work for the VT Marble Co. In World War 1 and 2 the VT Marble Co. made tools for the war. In 1937, the marble company opened the marble museum. Today, the factory is no longer used but the museum is still open.
When you visit you can see pictures of the old factory, try shaping marble yourself, learn about different places where Vermont marble can be seen such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington D.C., and shop for marble.
