Course Description:
“Child development refers to the sequence of physical, language, thought and emotional changes that occur in a child from birth to the beginning of adulthood.” The early years of a child’s life are essential for his or her development. Healthy development means that children of all abilities are able to grow up where their social, emotional and educational needs are met. In order to meet students’ needs, we must reflect on where our students are on the continuum. This professional learning experience will explain child development (2-5 years) as a whole, the importance of meeting children where they are in the continuum, strategies to support children, and strategies to support teachers during remote learning.
Learning Targets:
I will become familiar with developmental expectations of young children.
I will understand how trauma and negative interactions affect brain development.
I will learn strategies to help children get their needs met in a safe and appropriate manner: problem solving, friendship skills, and emotional literacy.
I will understand the importance of self-care to prevent caregiver burnout.

Play and Pre-K in a Virtual World and Small Group through Zoom
Course Description:
Play is an integral part of the Pre-K curriculum, but what does play look like during a pandemic. In this workshop participants will discuss ways to introduce and promote play virtually. We will provide strategies for teachers to incorporate Active Learning in their lessons as well as sharing ideas with families to support learning through play and hands-on experiences. Participants will discuss ways to modify the First 30 Days book for virtual learning with the Pre-K Pacing Guide. Seesaw and Zoom will also be discussed as the technology platforms for delivering instruction and facilitating small groups.
Learning Targets:
I will review the elements of Active Learning and how they can be incorporated through Virtual Learning.
I will understand the Pre-K Virtual Schedule and how it supports the High Scope Daily Routine.
I will understand the materials and resources (including the Pre-K Pacing Guide) available for planning instruction during Virtual Instruction.
I will understand strategies for building relationships with students and families during virtual instruction.
