What is it?

The History & Social Science Standards of Learning (SOL) are designed to develop knowledge and skills in history, geography, civics and economics to prepare students for informed participation in shaping the nation’s future.

How we do it:

Following the VDOE Curriculum Standards, grade level teachers create lessons and materials using a variety of resources to teach each standard. These resources may include BrainPOP Jr., read aloud trade books, digital lessons, biographies, Pebble Go, and teacher created materials.

What you can do to help!

Bedtime reading could be short biographies of historical figures and include discussions about the past VS. the present.

Discuss with your children the holidays that you celebrate, how you celebrate them and why you celebrate them.

Discuss with your children citizenship; following rules and directions, having chores or responsibilities, and the importance of treating one another with respect and kindness.

Involve your children in discussions about decision making when it comes to needs vs. wants and discuss with them the basic principles of economics.

When heading out, discuss the different important places and people in our local community.

Vacation planning could include a discuss about geography and directionality, use maps or trip brochures.
