The GCSE Geography course chosen is with Edexcel (Geography B). There are three components to the course which build on the Geography topics that students will have studied in Years 7, 8 and 9. If as a student you have enjoyed your Geography education so far at QPCS, you are likely to enjoy it as a GCSE subject. You will study the same syllabus whether you have chosen Geography in the Humanities block or general options.
Component 1: Global Geographical Issues.
· Topic 1: Hazardous Earth - Volcanoes and Earthquakes
· Topic 2: Development dynamics - The study of the levels of development of different countries.
· Topic 3: Challenges of an urbanising world - Cities, both in rich HICs and LICs
Written examination: 1 hour and 30 minutes, 94 marks, 37.5% of the qualification.
Component 2: UK Geographical Issues.
· Topic 4: The UK’s evolving physical landscape - Rivers and Coasts
· Topic 5: The UK’s evolving human landscape - Case Study London
· Topic 6: Geographical investigations including two, one day fieldtrips (coasts - Seaford; and urban - London Docklands)
Written examination: 1 hour and 45 minutes, 94 marks, 37.5% of the qualification.
Component 3: People and Environment Issues – Making Geographical Decisions.
· Topic 7: People and the biosphere
· Topic 8: Forests under threat
· Topic 9: Consuming energy resources
Written examination, 1 hour and 30 minutes, 64 marks, 25% of the qualification.
There is no controlled assessment. Fieldwork and Research skills will be tested in Component 2: Topic 6. Students will be required to undertake fieldwork which may take the form of a residential visit.
