The English courses offer varied, exciting and interesting programmes. Students will prepare for written external examinations in English Language and English Literature.
A wide variety of non-fiction texts will be studied for the AQA English Language examinations. Students will have the chance to explore and produce different writing styles including letters, stories, poems, speeches, blogs, newspaper reports, diary entries, creative writing and discursive essays. In addition, the syllabus will cover texts in multi-modal form as well as dramatic and film/media performances.
Spoken language, with a particular emphasis on formal Standard English, remains an important part of the course. Students will be assessed by their class teacher on their ability to communicate clearly and effectively in presentations, responding to questions and feedback. This element of the syllabus is compulsory: it does not constitute a percentage of the GCSE English grade, but will be reported as part of students’ overall GCSE results.
